Full Time

The one year full time Consecutive Bachelor of Education degree program prepares students to teach in either the Primary/Junior (Kindergarten - Grade 6) or Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7-12) streams.

Primary/Junior Stream

While there are no specific prerequisites for the Primary/Junior stream, applicants are encouraged to demonstrate a range of curriculum expertise in the subject areas listed below:

  • Arts (Dramatic, Musical, and/or Visual)
  • Computer Science
  • English and/or French
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Intermediate/Senior Stream

Trent University offers the following teaching subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Dramatic Arts
  • English
  • French
  • Geography
  • Health and Physical Education
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Native Studies
  • Physics
  • Visual Arts

Trent is particularly interested in helping to address the provincial teacher shortages in the following disciplines; Chemistry, Computer Science, French, Mathematics, and Physics. We strongly encourage applicants with expertise in these curriculum areas to apply to our Intermediate/Senior stream.
All applicants are required to have:

  • five (5) full course equivalents in their first teaching subject, AND
  • three (3) full course equivalents in their second teaching subject

We strongly recommend that students applying to History have one full credit in Canadian History. We strongly recommend that students applying to Computer Science have one full credit in computer programming or software design.

Note: French as a Second Language requires five full course equivalents as a first teaching subject or four full course equivalents as a second teaching subject.

Part-Time

The first of its kind in Ontario, a two-year part-time program is open to students pursuing the Primary/Junior stream. Created for teacher candidates who may be balancing family commitments and employment, the program is designed to be flexible and dynamic. Part-time students complete their courses and practicum requirements within two years.
