Scanning Assistant
What Do You Need To Do
- Scanning Assistants work with the Volunteer Coordinator and the Accommodations Coordinator to produce electronic copies of course texts.
- Work with scan and read programs to create textbooks on disk for disabled students.
Who Benefits?
- Student who have text related disabilities. Having pre-scanned texts allows students to access their readings in a way which matches their learning style. Students are able to complete readings without spending extensive time creating texts they can process.
- You as a volunteer will gain knowledge of the use and function of some forms of adaptive technology
Tips to Make it Easy
- Focus on the time, not the product when you are beginning. Adaptive software takes time to get comfortable with at the start.
- Spend time with the Adaptive Technologist, learning techniques to work with adaptive software.
What If?
- "What if I don't think I will be able to finish a text portion by the time the student needs to read it?"
Let the DSO know as soon as possible, we can work out a schedule which will help you complete it, or if the time conflicts with your studies we can look for another volunteer. Only provide as much time as you are willing and be sure not to forget your education
- "What if I have never worked with this type of technology before?"
Most people have not seen adaptive technology. The DSO understands that there is a learning process which all volunteers have to undergo before they will be completely comfortable with the scanning process. You only need to have basic computer skills (ie. How to operate a mouse and open a program), you will be shown program specific skills.
