Mobility Assistant
What You Need to Do:
- Provide assistance to students to navigate different areas of the campus. This may include guiding visually impaired students to class or other areas of campus; assisting a mobility impaired student to classes; or carry books or other materials for students who need this assistance due to mobility difficulties.
Who Benefits?
- Students who are visually impaired are assisted until routes to classes are learned or can access parts of the campus not on their regular routes.
- Students who have mobility impairments are able to get to classes or areas of the campus that may be difficult or inaccessible to them.
Tips to Make It Easy:
- Talk to the DSO about accessible routes around campus
- When assisting someone with a visual or mobility difficulty, ask them what type of assistance would be useful to them.
- When speaking with a person using a mobility aide such as a wheelchair, speak to them face to face.
"What If..."
"What if I don't know the accessible route?"
The DSO has an access map of Symons campus and can go over accessible routes with you.
"How will I know what routes are best for a blind student to use?"
If you are asked to volunteer in this way for a blind student, you will be provided with route instruction from a qualified CNIB orientation instructor.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hrs/week for first half of term.
