Academic Advising
Academic advising in each college is coordinated by the Senior Tutor who serves as chief advisor for the college. There is a particular focus on ensuring that first-year students have an opportunity to meet with an academic advisor during Introductory Seminar Week and at other times during that year. Upper-year students are encouraged to consult with departmental advisors for advice about the degree requirements of their chosen major or joint-major subjects.
Students who wish to petition against academic regulations consult with their Senior Tutor who provides advice and ensures that written petitions are complete before submission to the Committee on Undergraduate Petitions for adjudication. The Senior Tutors of the residential colleges are supervised by the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) and, together with the Senior Tutors from Julian Blackburn College, meet with her on a regular basis to ensure that academic advising across the university is consistent and well-coordinated.
The Fresh Start program is an option for students who have been put on academic suspension but have successfully petitioned to have that status reclassified to probation. These students sign a contract with their Senior Tutor agreeing to abide by the guidelines of the Fresh Start process that includes a commitment to regular meetings with the Senior Tutor and consultation with support staff at the Academic Skills Centre, the Counselling Centre and/or the Disability Services Office as warranted. A student is only eligible to participate in Fresh Start once during his or her degree program at Trent.
College Advisory Committees (CAC): Faculty and staff members of each residential college are invited to join the CAC, chaired by the Senior Tutor. Each CAC assists the Senior Tutor with advising all students in the college, particularly those in first year, and monitoring at-risk continuing students and those on probation. Members of the CAC normally make themselves available to students for one hour per week during the academic year. These drop-in sessions frequently overlap with their regularly-scheduled office hours.
