Cameron Ellis

I come to Trent having obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph with majors in both biological science and philosophy. As well, I obtained two Master of Arts degrees from Brock University: the first in philosophy; the second in comparative literature and the arts. My scholarly interests are triangulated by the theory and practice of psychoanalysis, Marxism, and phenomenology. Currently I am interested in examining the social and political implications of psychoanalysis: what kind of society might emerge from a populous of individuals who are no longer enamored with the notion of a big-Other? Is this kind of society possible? If so, is it desirable? These questions are preliminary; however, regardless of the matter, my interests are significantly informed and influenced by the work of Lacan, Kristeva, Badiou, and Zizek (while also being receptive to the critics, e.g. Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, etc). Through drawing upon contemporary cinema, literature, and associated cultural media I hope to contribute something meaningful to this area of research.

Cameron Ellis was nominated for a teaching award at Trent University in 2010-11 and in 2011-12.
