General research interests:

Dr. Hintelmann’s research focuses on the speciation and fate of metals in the environment. His group is exploring the use of stable isotopes to unravel the biogeochemical cycling of mercury employing ICP/MS techniques. Currently, he is involved in a number of field studies, covering diverse ecosystems from the Arctic to the Amazon, including whole ecosystem experiments such as METAALICUS and wetland restoration projects in the San Francisco Bay area. He recently started to investigate the fractionation of heavy elements in the environment, whereby the determination of Hg isotope fingerprints holds great potential to track mercury from pollution sources to environmental receptor sites.
