Our graduates find success in many fields

Thierry Bazay, 2002, Graduate : “The program's approach got me a step ahead of my peers with traditional commerce degrees. The interaction with, and access to, professors and staff has translated into a definite advantage in the work force”.

Ahmad Najim Dost, 2006 Graduate:  “I am currently in my final year of MPA in International Development at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. As for the value of Trent business, well it was good enough to get me here :) While my courses in economics helped develop number crunching and analytic skills, the business courses helped mainly develop my soft skills, i.e. communication and interpersonal skills, among others”.

James Andrews, 1999 Graduate: “Trent provided me a business education that included not only typical business number crunching courses, but unique literature, writing, and critical thinking classes that I believe are absent from many other business programs.  Particularly unique was the opportunity to supplement my business classes with other disciplines (Economics, Political Sciences, Native Studies, etc.) which gave me an opportunity to share a classroom with teachers and students with different views than the business students and faculty”.

Kimberley Behnan, 1991 Graduate: “I am a 1991 graduate of the Administrative and Policies studies program. Since than, my professional career has encompassed sales and management in the areas of telecom, call centre, venture capital and most recently within ICT (information communications and technology).  There are 3 core reasons why the A&P program helped me achieve many awards in sales and exceptional performance, promotions and lucrative compensations.  This course offers ‘intimacy’ that’s needed as a young adult to learn and apply the teachings. The classes are small enough to feel the instruction is being presented to ‘you’ and not the masses and the tutorial workshops offer an opportunity to collaborate and learn within a small uninhibited group.  The program offers diversity in many areas of business. When I started the program I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be ‘when I grew up’ but I know now how incredibly valuable it was to learn about economics, accounting law, marketing, political behaviours etc. And the managerial course each year deals directly with the real issues of business. Mostly the political culture of a business. Lastly the quality of the professors. Never did I imagine that after 16 years I would still hold a relationship with my Business professor. It is always a pleasure to discuss the real work life experience with him and the new graduates.  I am proud of being an honours graduate of the A&P program. It was challenging, interesting and a great accomplishment that attributes to the success I am now”.

Derek Fisk, 2001 Graduate: “My first day at Trent, I had no idea where I was going or what I wanted to do with my life.  My time at Trent and particularly the Business Program helped cultivate my growth personally and academically.  From then on, I began to forge the vision of my future and move forward with all my dreams, as well I made new ones along the way.  10 years later, I don't have it all figured out, but Trent has become an important part of the groundwork of my life, personally and professionally.  With my strong foundation from the Trent Business Program, I have learned to think independently and use my out of the box thinking in the Global business world”.

Mia Frankl, 2005 Graduate: "The Trent Business program is full of wonderful and energetic professors with outstanding resumes!! (not just saying that, you guys really are amazing!) The program is flexible and offers several joint major options. This proved to be a huge advantage for me as I combined business with environmental science. The program allowed me to explore the dynamics between the two fields and help bridge some of the gaps. I now work as a forest information officer at a regional government, where I apply business principles to the triple bottom line (socio-economic-environmental)."

Cory Thornton, 2000 Graduate: "Trent's Honour program in Business Studies is the most unique product offered by any university out there! -It's broad range of classes and professors will prepare you to excel in almost any career path chosen."

Jennifer Neufeld, 2000 Graduate: "The Trent B.A.S program offers a solid foundation in core business concepts plus the flexibility to study the key business areas that are of interest to you. The B.A.S degree in essence provides you with a well-rounded education in all disciplines of business administration. The personable professors, small class sizes and interactive nature of the classes provide you the tools to be able to be successful in whatever business career path you chose to take."

Jason HanleyJason Hanley is an Administrative Studies and Economics graduate who was also the recipient of the 1998 CIBC Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Jason's business, Soccer Plus International Group Ltd., has successfully filled a niche in the Peterborough market.

"Trent taught me a very important lesson - it helped me learn how to learn. My Administration program encouraged critical thought. Although you may feel critical thought, team work and presentations are not congruent with an enjoyable learning experience, when you attend an upper year Admin. Tutorial all that changes. Trent also taught me that the most ferocious competition are your friends BEFORE & AFTER intramural sporting events."

Jaime McKennaJaime McKenna: "The Business Administration program has provided me with knowledge and skills that have proven invaluable in reaching my career goals. Many students come from a business degree with such specific skill sets that they have difficulty understanding the 'entire organization'. Trent's Business Degree taught me how to work encompassing all aspects of a company, finance, human resources, operations; by providing a well-rounded education in all disciplines of business administration. The interactive nature of the classes has given me the ability to effectively present to large groups of people and participate fully in team discussions. I would recommend Trent to any student contemplating a Business degree - the friendships, knowledge, and memories I gained will last me a lifetime."

Sarah CoxSarah Cox, a 2001 graduate, is a Management Trainee at Enterprise Rent-a-Car. She says, "If students want to get the whole picture about how business works, this is the program. It looks at the many different aspects of business like marketing, communications and human resources and you can specialize if you want. The people skills I learned I can take through my whole life. We did a lot of group work and team building. It makes for a good resume.  We were a tight knit group. I got to know everyone in the program. It was a great atmosphere at Trent with small classes and one-on-one contact with professors. I highly recommend it."

Michael RoacheMichael Roache is a 2002 graduate. An international student from Bermuda, Michael had more than just a new country to adjust to when he came to Trent. Michael had been diagnosed with a learning disability which showed he had difficulty retrieving information from his long-term memory. Working with the staff and facilities in the Special Needs Office, Michael was taught how to compensate for his learning disability. Michael had a successful four years in Trent's Business Administration program and is heading off to law school at England's University of Nottingham.  I really enjoyed my time at Trent. The professors were very nice and easy to talk to. I liked the small school feeling here. Everywhere you go, you see someone you know. And I came to like Peterborough very much with its cafes, shops and art supply stores. This city is full of surprises."

"What I enjoyed most about Trent was the intimate yet challenging interactions between faculty and fellow students. The smaller groups allowed shared thoughts and provocative discourse. The calibre of our faculty and their studies which led them to Trent is invaluable. I feel a proud and stirring affiliation to Trent. I wear my ring everywhere I go, especially for business functions. I strongly wish to promote Trent's BAS Program and wish all its future students the Best of Wishes."
Angelo Nicolaides, BAS Grad 1995
Marketing Manager, Black & Decker, Richmond Hill, ON

"My education within the BAS Program has been an enormous asset in my professional life. The small, personal classes and accessibility to professors have greatly influenced my personal management style."
Cory Ainger, BAS 1992, Project Manager, CP Rail Systems

"My life at Trent was an enriching experience. As a student at Trent University, I found myself surrounded by many people who viewed the world differently than I did. Becoming friends with others in different fields allowed me to gain an understanding of business from a view point that I would never have received at any other university. I believe that my BAS degree has enabled me to succeed professionally."

Nancy Robinson, BAS 1992
Franchising Manager, mmmuffins Canada Corporation

"The BAS program provides a broad educational base, as well as enhancing "soft" skills. By soft skills I am referring to your ability to communicate, either verbally or in writing, and general interpersonal skills. In the medium to long term, these skills will be more valuable than your technical knowledge; these are the skills that will allow you to interact with your clients."
Ted Michalos, BAS 1991, CA 1994
Deloitte & Touche Chartered Accountants

John Dickey, BAS 1989, Proctor and Gamble: "Trent's BAS generalist focus, allowing for learning across a wide range of disciplines, clearly distinguished it from all other programs in Canada. BAS classes were small and interactive and developed critical thinking and communication skills . . . After a year of internal consulting in the financial industry, and a year developing Asian-Canadian trade links, I returned to the Western Business School for my MBA. The BAS degree provided me with a perspective that was lacking in my classmates. Currently, I work with Proctor and Gamble in consumer goods marketing. I am involved with recruiting and the key skills we search for are consistent with what the BAS program delivers."

"In a strange turn of events, I have ended up with DuPont Canada in Whitby. This is a company with an engineering/technology focus. I am unusual in that I am not an engineer or chemical scientist. I am finding that I can offer a different point of view. I develop models of future business options, work with marketing and technology staff on present business issues, and run the gamut of issues that arise in a global corporation. If my education had been completely involved in technical business issues, I do not believe that I would have the perspective necessary to add value to the operations of the company."
Glen LeClair, BAS 1984, Business Analyst, DuPont Canada

Heather Morrison, BAS 1991, ESL teacher: "I passed my CMA entrance exams in June of 1993 and worked for a car warranty business for a while. I started volunteering at a local language centre, teaching English as a second language to new immigrants and found that I like this very much. So now I am off to Korea in January (1995) to teach ESL for a year and do some travelling. I guess that this is kind of different from the traditional business graduate but I am happy."

Jean MacDonald: "The Trent program provides an interdisciplinary management education in a friendly, small group environment not available anywhere else. I wouldn't trade my time at Trent for anything!"

"I received a Masters of Industrial Relations from Queen's University and am presently doing management consulting with Price Waterhouse, working out of the Ottawa public sector practice unit. . . The multidisciplinary approach of the Administrative Studies Program is unique. In many respects, the Trent approach to management education has been ahead of its time. From the beginning, there has always been an emphasis on the 'people' side of the business. Only recently have other business-type programs added the emphasis on people which Trent has always had."
Andrew Barbour, BAS 1993, MIR 1994, Management Consultant, Price Waterhouse

"Trent gave me a solid foundation for my career. As a direct result of classroom size, the tutorial system, and the close knit community culture, I developed skills to communicate and express my views in front of my peers. The ability to state a position clearly and confidently is critical to creating and maintaining professional credibility."

Linda Hanley, B.A.S. (Hons.) 1985,

Marketing Representative, IBM Canada

Daley Petry, 1990 Grad: "The program offers a solid foundation of modern management skills such as accounting, finance, and marketing. More importantly, however, there is a real emphasis on the development of critical problem-solving skills required in today's dynamic environment."

"I have now been part of the management discipline for seven years and, in this time, have had the opportunity to see how the discipline is taught in different universities. I can say with certainty that the education I received at Trent was both of high quality and unique. A firm commitment to maintaining rigorous academic standards has ensured that the graduates of the program have strong conceptual skills and are able to communicate their ideas effectively."
Ashwin Joshi, BAS 1989, PhD Queen's University, Assistant Professor, Franklin Sobey Faculty of Commerce, St. Mary's University, Halifax

Kevin Covert, 1990 Graduate: "We are given the opportunity to work with small groups, to develop skills rather than hide in large groups. You communicate with professors on a one-to-one basis."

"The B.A.S. provides individuals with skills enabling them to contribute in a wide variety of occupations. Graduates are able to see change involving both work flow and the human element."

J. K. McLinden, 1991, Manager, Parts and Components, GE Canada

Bill Graves, 1990 Graduate: "The program stresses that those who maintain awareness, question critically, and are receptive to change, will thrive in the dynamic global society."

Brian Moore, 1990 Graduate: "The program has changed the way I look at organizations."

Yvette Bartlett, 1990 Graduate: "The program promotes and practices good group working skills. Students have many opportunities to obtain knowledge from professionals as well as peers and to gain practice at problem-solving, presentation, and group dynamics."

Barbara Anderson, 1990 Graduate: "We get a broad perspective on all areas of management. The program has very practical applications."
