From the Office of the President

August 7, 2008

Subject: Further Restructuring Effective September 1, 2008

Trent alumni are advised that in August, 2008 the President’s Office announced restructuring of Trent University’s senior administration team.

Effective September 1, 2008, a new academic leadership structure will be put in place that will see the Vice President Academic portfolio split among other senior administrators, eliminating one senior academic administrative position.

The new structure for the next two to three years will see the creation of two newly titled vice presidential portfolios  – Vice President Academic & Dean of Arts and Sciences and secondly, Vice President Research, International & Strategic Enrolment Management.  The former will be assumed by Dr. Christine McKinnon and the latter by Dr. Jim Parker.

The remaining ‘direct reports’ within the former Vice President Academic’s administrative structure will now report directly to Christine McKinnon, who will lead the combined portfolio of Vice President Academic and Dean of Arts & Sciences.  These reports include:

  • Dean of Graduate Studies
  • Associate Dean Undergraduate Studies
  • Associate Dean Part-time Studies and Principal of JBC
  • Associate Dean Science
  • and Undergraduate Chairs and Directors.

Christine’s leadership will guide, amongst other things, academic planning, undergraduate program review, program renewal, joint committee, college/university partnerships including Oshawa expansion, and faculty relations.

The major reporting areas that will shift from the former Vice President Academic responsibility to Jim Parker’s portfolio will be as follows:

  • University Registrar
  • Senior Director Student Affairs
  • University Librarian
  • Head of Colleges and College Heads
  •  Director Trent International Program
  • Associate Vice President Research
  • and the Journal of Canadian Studies

Further responsibilities will be taken on by Dr. Doug Evans, who will assume a newly titled role of Associate Vice President & Dean of Graduate Studies in a broadened  portfolio that includes in addition to serving as Dean of Graduate Studies, the Headship of Traill College, PEG Academic Liaison on the Centres of Knowledge working collaboratively with Dianne Lister the VP External Relations and Advancement, Academic Space Planning working in collaboration with Don O’Leary, Vice President (Administration), and service on a newly created Presidential Task Force on Internationalization.
