Selection Criteria

  • The Committee will have two student representatives each year.
  • The student representatives will be majors or joint-majors with the Department and should have a minimum average of B-.
  • One of the students should be a fourth-year (or beyond) student; the second should be in second or third year.  At the end of the year, when the senior student graduates, the junior member may be offered the senior position for the next year.
  • Where possible, at least one of the students should have completed at least one course in an ancient language; it may be preferable that both have done so.
  • Where possible, a gender balance should be attained.
  • Where possible, the two student reps should come from different sub-disciplines of Classics (literature, history, archaeology).
  • In March each year, the Department instructors should announce the open position(s) to their classes; an announcement should also be made at the Course Information Session in March.  Interested students will be requested to contact the Chair by March 31st.  At the next meeting of the Departmental Committee after the deadline, the Committee members will elect the student representatives.  The Department will therefore have student representatives in place during the summer and for the following year.
