Honours B.Sc.

The Honours B.Sc. provides opportunities for students to pursue an integrated program of study that combines environmental science, biology, geography, chemistry and other fields that are relevant to the science and practice of food production and consumption. The degree includes required and recommended courses that address the following curriculum:

  • scientific principles and practices relevant to agricultural production
  • environmental impacts of agriculture (including its implications for environmental issues such as climate change, nutrient management, biodiversity conservation, and invasive species)
  • the science and practice of sustainable and organic agriculture
  • topics in biological science relevant to agriculture, including plant biology and ecology
  • basic principles and techniques of environmental science
  • selected topics in anthropological science, chemistry and geography relevant to agriculture.

Honours B.A.

The Honours B.A. provides opportunities for students to pursue a program of study that integrates social scientific and humanistic perspectives on food and agriculture. The degree includes required and recommended courses drawn primarily from Anthropology, Environmental and Resource Studies, Geography and International Development Studies. These courses address the following curriculum:

  • the political, social, and environmental dimensions of agricultural production
  • the relationship between agricultural production and other land uses
  • how we consume food, examined from political, social and cultural perspectives
  • food distribution, from the local to the global scale: the economics, politics, and ethics of local food supply networks in the context of global trade; current trading patterns and the prospects for fair trade in olive oil, coffee, and other commodities
  • agriculture and community economic development
  • food production and distribution in the developing world
  • indigenous perspectives on food and agricultural production.
