Dr. Steven E. Franklin, Ph.D.
Biography

During his career, Dr. Steven E. Franklin has held academic and administrative appointments at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Calgary, Memorial University, and the University of Waterloo.  Just prior to taking office as Trent University's seventh President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Franklin was the Vice President of Research at the University of Saskatchewan (2003-2009) , where he provided overall leadership in developing and promoting university research and scholarship.

  • Strategic leadership and other experience includes:
    • Special Assistant to the Provost at the University of Calgary, Associate Dean Research, Head of the Geography Department,
    • Provided leadership to the Enhancing Undergraduate Learners’ Experience (EULE) initiative, which included curriculum change, inquiry-based learning, and research opportunities for undergraduates,
    • Led an intensive Dialogue Series at the Learning Commons with sessions that highlighted Academic Advising, Information Literacy, Teaching Large Classes Effectively, The Explicit Syllabus, Increasing Internationalization, and Evaluation of X-Based-Learning,
    • Participant in international trade missions, including Europe, China and India, supervision and mentoring of more than 100 undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows
  • Pursued graduate work at the University of Waterloo where Dr. Franklin completed his Master of Arts degree in Physical Geography and a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Remote Sensing
  • Current academic interests focus on interdisciplinary environmental science, and the application of satellite and aerial remote sensing to terrain analysis and environmental management
  • Award winning academic
    • Publications include more than 120 refereed journal articles, and four books, with the most recent published in 2009 by McGraw-Hill Professional entitled Remote Sensing for Biodiversity and Wildlife Management: Synthesis and Applications.
