What is an e-resource?
Trent University Library subscribes to a number of different of electronic resources such as journal article indexes, full text and primary documents, e-journals, e-reference tools, and e-books. These are resources that can only be viewed on a computer. They are often called online resources, because they are available over the internet. A few of our e-resources are on CD-ROM and only available on campus.

Specialized Reference Tools
The Birds of North America	The print version of BNA was completed in 2002, a joint 10 year project of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Academy of Natural Sciences. This series provides detailed scientific information (18 volumes, 18,000 pages in total) for each of the 716 species of birds nesting in the USA and Canada. BNA Online includes image and video galleries showing behaviors, habitat, nests, eggs and nestlings, and recordings of that bird's songs and calls, selected from the extensive collection in Cornell's Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds. Health and Wellness Resource Centre	Provides instant access to carefully compiled and trusted medical reference materials. Includes nearly 400 health/medical journals, numerous reference volumes, over 700 health videos from partner Healthology, Inc., hundreds of pamphlets and health-related articles from 2,200 general interest publications in addition to a broad collection of Thomson Gale reference titles. Scholars Portal Books	New in 2010! This online platform allows you to search over 200,000 online books. Scholars Portal Books provides access to several collections of books to which Trent has purchased access and those available for free from the Internet Archive. Since the collection includes books available to any Ontario University, select "Full Text" to limit your search to those available at Trent.
ACLS Humanities E-Book Collection	An online, fully searchable collection of over 1700 high-quality books in history, recommended and reviewed by historians. From the American Council of Learned Societies. The Project incorporates two different types of electronic books: new XML-encoded titles, and scanned page-image versions of already-published titles. Each book is also available through TOPCAT. See the description for this resource.
Cambridge University Press	A collection of 2,431 e-book titles from Cambridge UP and Cambridge UP USA. All of these books can also be found by searching TOPCAT. Users can search the full text of all content on the platform and reference this by keyword, author, ISBN, publisher, publication date, subject or category. Text and images can be copied from titles into Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (subject to individual publisher restrictions) . These books are available through the ebrary platform. They are included in the Scholars Portal Books database.
Canadian Health Research Collection	A collection of e-books from Canadian research institutes, government agencies and university centres working in the area of health and medical research. The organizations included in this collection are very active publishers of primary research in the field. The publications included are both general policy documents as well as those of a specialized technical nature. Searchable by title, author, subject, publisher, and full text (see here for searching help). It can also be browsed by subject category - click on the "Browse" tab. Taylor & Francis	A collection of 11,697 e-book titles from Taylor & Francis. All of these books can also be found by searching TOPCAT. Users can search the full text of all content on the platform and reference this by keyword, author, ISBN, publisher, publication date, subject or category. Text and images can be copied from titles into Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (subject to individual publisher restrictions) . These books are available through the ebrary platform, but they are NOT yet included in the Scholars Portal Books database, due to license restrictions.
University Press Scholarship Online (UPSO)	UPSO is a collection of over 8,000 scholarly ebooks in 23 subject areas from the following nine leading university presses: Oxford University Press, Cairo University Press, Edinburgh University Press, Florida University Press, Fordham University Press, Hong Kong University Press, Kentucky University Press, The Policy Press (Bristol), University of California Press. These titles should be loaded into TOPCAT by the end of summer 2012. They will also be included in the Scholars Portal Books database.
uO Research	A collection of 30+ books freely available from the University of Ottawa institutional repository. The goal of uO Research is to promote scholarly communication by collecting, preserving and providing free and open access to the digital research products created by the uOttawa faculty, researchers and graduate students. These books are downloadable in .pdf format. Many are in French.

What is a "Primary Document"?

Art Project (by Google)	Explore museums from around the world, discover and view hundreds of artworks at incredible zoom levels, and even create and share your own collection of masterpieces. Select a museum from the homepage and then either choose ‘Explore the museum’ or ‘View Artwork’. Once you are in the main site use the drop-down menus or the side info bar to navigate between artworks and museums. Finally create and share your own collections online. This is a free (Public) site - no subscription is required.
Burney Collection: 17th-18th Century Newspapers	A database of historical British news, in full text. Includes pamphlets, proclamations, newsbooks and newspapers from the period. See the description for this resource.
Champlain Society Digital Collection	The digital collection contains eighty-three of the Champlain Society's most important volumes (over 41,000 printed pages) dealing with exploration and discovery over three centuries. It includes first-hand accounts of Samuel de Champlain's voyages in New France as well as the diary from Sir John Franklin's first land expedition to the Arctic, 1819-22. Digital National Security Archive: The Documents that Made U.S. Policy	This collection of significant primary documents, central to U.S. foreign and military policy since 1945, comprises over 63,000 declassified documents in 29 collections. House of Commons Parliamentary Papers	Between 1801 and 2000, around 9.5 million pages for over 184,000 British parliamentary papers were published. HCPP delivers searchable full text for each paper, along with a detailed index. HCPP currently contains an index for 1801-2004, and full text for 1840-1891 and 1901-1904. The 19th century will be complete by early 2006, with the 20th century following later in the year. See the description for this resource.
In the First Person	An index to letters, diaries, oral histories and personal narratives. In the First Person provides in-depth indexing of more than 2,500 collections of oral history in English from around the world. Not all documents are available full text online. Making of America	Making of America (MOA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history primarily from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. Business Videos from EBSCO	EBSCO's Business Source Complete includes a collection of business videos from the Harvard Faculty Seminar Series. Follow the link to Business Source Complete, then choose "Business Videos" from the search screen.
General OneFile	A general database containing journal articles and news items, some with video or audio files.
*Journal of Visualized Experiments*	A peer reviewed, PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of biological research in a video format.
National Film Board (NFB) Online Screening Room	Streaming video access to over 800 films, clips and trailers from the NFB collection via their website. See the description for this resource.
Streamed Films @ Trent Library	A small number of our purchased films have been licensed, digitized, and hosted for streaming over the internet. A complany called "McNabb Connolly" provides this service. Titles were selected based on circulation activity, demand for materials moving between Peterborough and Oshawa, and availability of streaming rights. Resolution is best on a personal computer/tablet screen. Links to specific films can be found in TOPCAT.
Thanhouser Films Online	A free streaming service with 50+ films from the early 1900s.
Theatre In Video	Contains more than 250 definitive performances of the world's leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video. See the description for this resource.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses - Full Text	The Trent Library subscribes to this database, which provides access to world-wide dissertations and theses, many in full text. It includes over 2.7 million dissertation and theses citations from 1861 to the present day, and 1 million full text dissertations that are available for download in PDF format. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full text coverage for older graduate works.
Theses Canada Portal	Search for bibliographic records of all theses in the National Library of Canada theses collection. Provides free access to the full text electronic versions of many Canadian theses and dissertations digitized between 1998 and 2002.
