Search TOPCAT to find out what books, journals, newspapers,
reserve readings, maps, government publications, and pamphlets we
have in the library, on order, or available electronically (e-books
and e-journals). TOPCAT provides the call number, location, status,
and publication information. TOPCAT does NOT provide information
such as what articles are in each volume of a journal; use an index
for this.
TOPCAT can search by keyword or browse a list of titles, authors, or LC Subject Headings. There's also a Power Search option. See the TOPCAT tutorial for details.
You can also search other libraries and research centres for resources.
The library subscribes to many indexes, most of which are online databases. The Directory of Online Databaes page lists all of our online index subscriptions by title and provides links to connect to them.
Indexes are tools used to help locate articles or (sometimes) book chapters. Use an appropriate index for your subject area to find out where the articles on your topic have been published. Once you know what's been published, find out if our library has access to the material, either in print, online, or by ordering it from another library (ILL). See the Tutorial on Finding Articles for more help with this process.
Most of these resources are restricted to use by current Trent students, staff, and faculty. You can access e-resources from off-campus using the proxy server.
Trent's E-Resources include online indexes, e-journals, e-reference sources, full-text and primary resources, and e-books. These are resources available online, providing the full text on your computer screen. On this page find e-resources listed by type of resource, and links to connect you to them.
To see resources listed by subject, go to the Subject Guides.

When you know which journals you need, Journal Titles Available Online allows you to locate online journals available to the Trent community. If you don't know which journals have the articles you need, use an index first.
Click on the "Citation Linker" tab to link to a specific citation, or just follow the links to the journal, issue, and page needed.
You can also search TOPCAT for journals, including e-journals.
Most courses have Reserve items listed in TOPCAT. Get the call number and ask for them at the Circulation Desk.
Some courses, especially those taught in Oshawa have online Reserves using eRes. To access these items, follow the link to eRes and enter the username/password provided by your course instructor. Items available through eRes may only be accessed by students registered in the course.
Media (also known as "moving images" or "audiovisual material") include films, DVDs, and videos. All titles owned by Trent are included in TOPCAT (the Library catalogue).
