Photocopiers Allow Free Scanning to USB Drive

Posted May 15, 2012

Now you can photocopy for free if you save to a USB drive rather than print. Our new photocopiers have the option to "Scan" as well as copy.

How? Press the "Scan" button before you start. (The default is "Copy".)
On the screen, select "USB". Choose a file format: PDF, TIFF, or XPS.
Insert your USB stick in the slot to the left of the screen.
Scan just as you would copy, but instead of a paper copy, a digital copy is placed on your USB stick.

Please ignore the "Email" option, as it has not been activated.

Most of our photocopiers are in the Multimedia Room on the Main Floor of Bata Library. If you need assistance, ask at the door at the back of the room.

Power Outage on Symons Campus

Posted May 2, 2012

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHYSICAL RESOURCES DEPARTMENT

Please be advised that the Physical Resources Department (PRD) will be performing maintenance and upgrades to the electrical services at the University, which will require power outages over the summer period.

A power outage is planned for Sunday, May 6 starting at 8 p.m. with the outage lasting until 6 a.m. on Monday, May 7. This outage will affect buildings on the West Bank of Symons campus only, with the exception of Blackburn Hall.

The University data centre, including all e-mail, file (H: and S: drives), web servers, instructional delivery, and library servers, will be shut down beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, and will return to normal operational status by 8 a.m. on Monday, May 7.
This includes off-campus access to library resources that require the proxy server.

Safety phones and emergency paging systems will not be available on the West Bank. Telephone service in Blackburn Hall and the Oshawa campus only will function normally, though voicemail service throughout the Symons campus will continue to operate as usual.

Client access to e-mail, including Groupwise, web access, and Blackberry will not be available during the outage, however, all incoming e-mail will continue to be accepted by our backup system, and no e-mails will be lost as a result of this shutdown.

Internet access, including wireless, will be unavailable in the affected buildings.

A temporary web page at www.trentu.ca will advise visitors that our web site is unavailable due to maintenance.

Thanking you in advance for your anticipated co-operation.

New E-Books from University Press

Posted May 1, 2012

Trent University Library is pleased to announce the acquisition of University Press Scholarship Online (UPSO) acquired through an OCUL consortial purchase with Oxford University Press.

UPSO is a collection of over 8,000 scholarly ebooks in 23 subject areas from the following nine leading university presses:

Oxford University Press - 7000+ - titles
PLUS
Cairo University Press - 57 titles
Edinburgh University Press - 261 titles
Florida University Press - 171 titles
Fordham University Press - 204 titles
Hong Kong University Press - 118 titles
Kentucky University Press - 111 titles
The Policy Press (Bristol) - 291 titles
University of California Press - 411 titles

The majority of the books in the OCUL licensed UPSO collection are published between the mid 2000s to March 2012. This is a tremendous addition to our holdings, highly relevant to Trent's academic programmes, filling gaps in our monograph collection -- particulary in the humanities and social sciences.

These ebooks are currently available on the UPSO platform. They will soon be added to TOPCAT and Scholarsportal Books.

Three Group Study Rooms Added at Bata

Posted March 8, 2012

Three new  Group Study Rooms are ready for student use via the Library Room Booking system; find the link to "Book a Group Study Room" on the library homepage.
Rooms may be booked up to a week ahead of time.

The new rooms are on the 1st (lower) floor:

  • 106.11 maximum 4 people (not lockable due to fire hose cabinet)
  • 106.10 maximum 4 people (keypad code on door - ask for code at the Circulation Desk if it's locked)
  • 106.1 maximum 8 people (not locked)

This brings the number of bookable study rooms to seven: five at Bata and two at Oshawa.

Book these new rooms online, then go directly to the room at the time you've booked. Since no key is required for the new rooms, there's no need to stop at the Circulation Desk.
For the time being, keys are still required for rooms 309 and 207.

Using the Library Room Booking system provides consistency for the scheduling of Library spaces, enables students to plan their work
and promotes accountability for the condition of the rooms. Rooms are booked using a valid Trent account username.
Circulation staff also use the booking system to solve disputes and to ensure that no group is abusing the 2-hour limit.

Signs are posted on the doors.
Since these rooms are located in a Red (silent) Zone, you are asked to keep noise levels to a moderate level and close the door.
The Bata Library will re-evaluate the Learning Zones designations in the near future.

MLA Bibliography Now on GALE Platform

Posted March 6, 2012

The MLA Bibliography (previous accessed through EBSCO) is now available through the GALE platform, making it searchable alongside the Literature Resource Center. The MLA Bibliography is a popular database for finding articles dealing with literature topics in scholarly books and journals. In moving our subscription to the GALE plaform, we've made it easier to find more information on literary topics with a single search.

Search for a keyword, a person, or a work. Results are sorted into tabs for:

  • criticisms,
  • biographies,
  • overviews,
  • reviews,
  • primary sources,
  • multimedia, and
  • MLA Bibliography results.

There are embedded links to full text resources, as well as a Get It! Trent button for linking to our online journals and searching TOPCAT (for book chapters).

GALE also has a mobile app for accessing all GALE databases on the go. (iPad, iPhone, iPod, Android)

Link to the MLA and Literature Resource Center here.

Give it a try and send us your comments.

Installation/Art Performance : Wendy Trusler

Posted January 19, 2012

February 1, 10am-3pm
Artist-in-Residence (Gzowski College) Wendy Trusler will be in the central atrium of Bata Library.

Wendy Trusler is a visual artist who creates site-responsive installations that incorporate various media, including drawing, painting, sculpture and film. Her installations have been presented in a variety of contexts, from galleries to storefront windows, industrial spaces to parks. Her interest in the roles that symbol and language play in coding memory continues with Voices at Hand.

Voices at Hand by Wendy Trusler will take place at Trent University, February 1 - 8, 2012. Described on her blog as "part art installation, part performance & part travelling archive," Wendy examines the essence of why we keep letters. Included in her collection of over 3,300 letters are copies of nineteenth-century items from Trent University Archives.

Events will take place at Bata Library on February 1 and at Gzowski College on February 2-8. Voices at Hand is co-sponsored by Bata Library and Gzowski College.

Throughout her Trent residency Trusler will liaise with students and faculty, read aloud on request from the collection and bring letters from the Trent University Archives to life. New submissions from the public are also welcome and can be delivered to the Peter Gzowski College office (GSC-214) after January 23 or delivered to Trusler on site during the run.

Interlibrary Loans Policy Changes

Posted August 4, 2011

Starting September 1, 2011, the following Interlibrary Loan (ILL) policy changes below are in effect.
The Library has instituted these policies in an effort to balance our consortium responsibilities with our clients’ needs.

  • Interlibrary Loan Grace Period is 2 (two) days (reduced from 4 days) for all ILL material except Media. The ILL media policy remains unchanged with no grace period.
  • ILL Recalled Items Due in 5 (five) days (increased from due immediately) in cases where the lending library recalls the material at any time, resulting in the original due date being reduced. Previously, recalled material was due immediately and this did not provide sufficient time for return of items.

Web of Science Has a New Interface

Posted July 18, 2011

Web of Science/Knowledge released their new web interface today. The new look is cleaner and simpler, making it easier to use and navigate through the database.

A richer display of cited reference search results allows user to view full title and source information, times cited counts for cited references, and navigate to full text. Improved flexibility in cited reference searching and simplified display of the Lookup Table makes it easier to view and identify relevant results.

Now includes "lemmatization": spelling variations (such as US and UK spelling differences) in topic and title search terms are found automatically (for example, behavior and behaviour).

More information on changes is available here.

See our Help page on Cited Reference Searching to understand how to use this resources more completely.

NetLibrary E-Books Move to EBSCO

Posted July 13, 2011

NetLibrary has been purchased by EBSCO. Now all our NetLibrary books are available ONLY through EBSCO eBooks.

UPDATE: EBSCO eBooks is now live.

  • Holds
  • Notes
  • Articles
  • Images
  • Journal Alerts
  • Saved Searches
  • and more!

Stay tuned for further information on EBSCO E-Books as the new site becomes available.

Switching Political Science Databases

Posted July 7, 2011

The Library regularly evaluates our online resources in terms of their suitability for Trent's teaching and research needs. We recently switched from PAIS and Worldwide Political Science Abstracts to EBSCO's Political Science Complete and Public Affairs Index.

Political Science Complete contains full text for more than 520 journals, and indexing and abstracts for over 2,900 titles. Researchers also have access to more than 340 full text reference books and monographs, as well as over 36,000 full text conference papers.

Public Affairs Index covers aspects of contemporary public policy issues. These include banking and finance, criminal justice, education, energy, humanitarian issues, politics and elections, etc.

Because these political science products are on the EBSCO search platform, researchers will be able to cross search these databases with Academic Search Elite and other EBSCO databases to which the Library already subscribes.

Bata Library Update from the University Librarian – Summer 2011

Posted July 5, 2011

As announced at the end of April, this summer the Trent University Library has embarked upon a project to re-organize the Bata Library stack collection so that it is shelved in sequential Library of Congress call number order from A to Z on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Library.

The project is proceeding on schedule. As of June 30th, about 55% of the collection had been reorganized and moved. The remaining parts of the collection are either in temporary locations in the Bata Library, or waiting to be relocated to their permanent location as shifting continues.

During the reorganization, the Library continues to follow the established policy of removing print journals that are available through a trusted digital repository*. This summer, the Library is removing print equivalents of JSTOR and Annual Reviews collections.

For more information on the current status of the Bata Library stack reorganization, please consult the Library webpage.

* A trusted digital repository is one whose mission is to provide reliable, long-term access to managed digital resources to its designated community, now and in the future.

Taylor & Francis Move

Posted July 4, 2011

Taylor & Francis is a publishing company which supplies Trent with online journals. Until now we've had access through an interface called Informaworld. The journals have recently moved to a new home on the Taylor & Francis Online site.

Taylor & Francis migrated the journals beginning June 27, and some unexpected problems have been encountered. They hope to resolve outstanding issues by July 8.

If you have trouble accessing any Taylor & Francis journals, either through Informaworld or Taylor & Francis Online, please send the details to libraryhelp@trentu.ca and we'll sort it out for you.

Scholars Portal Search Engine Retires

Posted July 4, 2011

After many successful years of service, the Scholars Portal Search engine is being retired. This interface has been heavily used by Ontario University students and faculty for many years as a popular starting point for research in our Scholars Portal index databases. However, it has become outdated. It's being replaced by a new ProQuest interface.

Trent currently has access to 77 index databases on the Scholars Portal platform, covering almost every subject area.
The majority of these database will now be searchable via the new ProQuest interface (search engine).
Those that are not searchable via the ProQuest interface will be searchable on their own native interface.

See the new ProQuest interface. We think you'll like the new look and features.

Over the coming weeks you'll see changes in the search screens and options in Scholars Portal databases, as we make the move to the new interface - database by database. Instead of "Scholars Portal Search", you'll see "ProQuest Databases", but the content will be much the same as it was with Scholars Portal.
These changes should be complete by July 15, 2011.

Scholars Portal has NOT gone away.
The majority of our e-journals are still accessed on the Scholars Portal servers, linked through Get It Trent and also searchable directly as the Scholars Portal Journals database (with 22,383,238 articles from over 8,925 full text journals covering every academic discipline - at last count).
We look forward to seeing plans for a new search engine to our index databases soon.

Please contact libraryhelp@trentu.ca if you experience any difficulties with the new ProQuest interface.

Bata Library Parking Lots Closed for Construction

Posted June 1, 2011

Update August 10: The parking lots are all open again - and they look great!

Update August 3:

Please be advised that paving and line painting on parking lots H and I, as well as the Bata turning circle will be taking place during the week of August 2-5 and that parking will be unavailable in those areas during this time.

Until later notice, the Trent Express and George North bus routes will be rerouted to the East Bank.

Please check MyTrent for updates on parking and bus drop offs.

Update, July 18:

The second lift of asphalt and line painting has been delayed until Wednesday or Thursday next week (July 27 or 28). Until then, the transit schedule will return to its normal west bank schedule and the roadway and H and I Lots are open for parking. Permits or Pay and Display slips are required. There are no parking spot lines, so parkers are asked to use their best judgement and avoid blocking others. Please note that the drain covers stick up two inches above the first lift of asphalt but are painted bright orange to assist in visibility. As well, the contractor will be landscaping around the lots so there will be workers and heavy equipment moving about. Please exercise caution when driving in the lots or on the Bata turning circle.

We have asked for 24 hour notice from the contractor and will advise you the day before the lots and roadway will be closed for final resurfacing. We anticipate the lots and roadway will only be closed for 24 hours.

Thank you for your patience.

Parking Services Team

Starting Monday June 6, 2011 Bata Library parking lots (H and I) will be closed for resurfacing. The estimated completion date is July 18, 2011.

Alternative pay and display and permit parking is available in K, L, M, N, G and O lots. Designated parking spots for persons with disabilities are available at either the Conference Services lot or the lot in front of the Athletics Complex.

Parking Map

The project will improve pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular safety by:

Lot H (between Bata Library and Trent Community & Recreation Sport Centre (TCSRC)

  • widening the entrance to two lanes
  • levelling and smoothing the asphalt surface
  • moving the founders walk access path to the e-phone to improve access to emergency assistance
  • creating a permanent bicycle shelter beside the lot
  • adding 12 new spaces
  • simplifying the parking space layout

Lot I (pay and display )

  • increasing the size of each parking spot to standard size
  • improving the traffic flow
  • levelling and smoothing the asphalt surface

We appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Bata Library Stack Reorganization
May - August

Posted May 25, 2011

Update: The project was completed on August 19! About 400,000 books were moved by 5 student workers,
under the direction of Library Facilities and Collections Coordinator, Jeff Domm.

This summer Bata Library reorganized the stack collection.
It is now shelved in sequential order by Library of Congress call number (A-Z), from the 3rd Floor to the 4th Floor.

We now have:

A - PR on the 3rd Floor
and
PS - ZA on the 4th Floor.

This photo shows the last book being moved to its new location, on August 19.
Left to right: Autumn McConkey, Jason Dos Reis, Maureen Heffernan, William MacMillan, and Jeff Domm. Missing for the photo was Rebeca Cudd.

During part of this period call numbers starting with PQ will be unavailable; these items may be ordered via ILL.
Other material may be intermittently relocated or unavailable as it is shifted.
Most of the 3rd Floor is being used for temporary storage locations while we make room for permanent locations; all of the study areas in the corners are now storage areas.
The 3rd Floor cannot serve as a silent study floor during this project.

We'll keep the latest changes posted on our homepage and on a sign in the Bata Library atrium.
We're doing our best to post signs in locations where items have been moved, directing you to their current location.
Staff members working on the relocation are happy to direct you to the new or temporary location of items you can't find.

We understand that this project will inconvenience library patrons over the summer, and we apologize for the disturbance.
It's a large project, but we expect the resulting consistency and organization to be a great improvement.

New Subscription: JoVE

Posted February 10, 2011

The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer reviewed, PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of biological research in a video format.

Established as a new tool in life science publication and communication, with participation of scientists from leading research institutions, JoVE takes advantage of video technology to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of life science research. Visualization greatly facilitates the understanding and efficient reproduction of both basic and complex experimental techniques, thereby addressing two of the biggest challenges faced by today’s life science research community: i) low transparency and poor reproducibility of biological experiments and ii) time and labor-intensive nature of learning new experimental techniques. Find a link to JoVE in TOPCAT, on our E-Resources and Directory of Online Databases pages, and on relevant Subject Guides.

Multimedia Room in Bata Library

Posted September 7, 2010

The Bata Library has re-named the former Photocopy and Microforms Room as the “Multimedia Room”.  This room is on the Main Floor of the Library, on the back wall across from the base of the stairs.

The Student Card Office used to be in this room, but it moved to Blackburn Hall.  Now the room houses:

  • Current Periodicals,
  • Photocopiers,
  • Microforms, and the
  • Media Viewing Room.

Photocopiers were moved from the 3rd Floor to this room, where students can find them in one central location and staff assistance is close by.

The Current Periodicals were moved into the room from just outside it. A seating area has been created to read periodicals.

The microforms remain here, with machines for reading, printing, or downloading content.

A new addition is the Media Viewing Room, which houses 2 TVs with DVD/VHS players where videos  can be viewed in the Library. Sign out a key at the Circulation Desk for access.

If you need assistance with anything in the Multimedia Room, ask at the service door at the back of the room.  See the Multimedia Room webpage.

Bata Library Learning Zones

Posted September 3, 2010

Look for these symbols in the Bata Library. Choose your study spot accordingly.

Where can I meet with friends in the library?  Where can I find a silent place to study in the library? Am I allowed to bring food into the library?  The new Learning Zones answer these types of questions.

Our new Learning Zones will be clearly marked throughout the Bata Library, identifying where food, drink, and noise is allowed. Library staff will help monitor the Zones and enforce compliance.  When necessary, Trent Security will be called to deal with offenders.

See the Learning Zones description.

The library is the information hub and gathering place on campus for individual and group learning.  Library staff want to help establish an environment that is conducive to all types of learning, productivity, and academic success. The Learning Zones promote the library as a space for research, reflection, discovery, and learning, while minimizing unwelcome disturbance to others.

Look for signs indicating Learning Zones throughout the library. Associated with each Zone code is a set of Expectations, Benefits, and Cautions. We encourage students to select the Zone that best fits the needs of their library visit.

If you have questions, ask library staff for assistance or email us.

Oshawa Campus Library Opening September 7

Posted August 23, 2010

Trent’s new Thornton Road campus in Oshawa is scheduled to open after Labour Day. Kenneth Field, the new Oshawa Campus Librarian, is confident that he and his staff will be ready for students September 7.

The first week they’ll be providing limited service, since phones and computers may not be connected until late in the week.  But the books are on the shelves and the furniture is on site. The library system, TOPCAT, has been updated to accommodate our new branch library.  Systems have been established for transporting items between libraries (see the webpage).

Joining Ken in Oshawa are John Wales, the Library Services Coordinator, and Janet Martin and Laurel Coo, the Library Services Assistants. Together they will be providing full Library Services to all the members of the Trent in Oshawa community.

Beginning in September, Library Orientation sessions will be offered to inform members of the Trent in Oshawa community of the services available to them through the new Library.

Inquires about Orientation sessions or services can be directed to Ken Field or John Wales. See the Oshawa Campus Library webpages for information and updates.
