Finding Resources in Physics

Books

To find general books in the Bata Library, use TOPCAT. A general keyword search for "physics" finds over 3,000 items and is not a very helpful search. Use more specific search terms, such as:

Nanotechnology
Soft condensed matter
Quantum optics
Superconductivity
Astrophysics
Critical phenomena
Energy-band theory
Mass spectrometry

When you find one item of use on your topic, use the subject headings to help you find more.

Articles

For Physics, some of the important resources are available online free of charge, including the LANL and NASA databases. Important resources to which the Trent Library subscribes are the AIP (American Institute of Physics) and APS (American Physical Society) e-journals and the Science Citation Index Expanded (part of Web of Knowledge).

Science Citation Index Expanded is a multidisciplinary index to the journal literature of the sciences. It fully indexes 5,900 major journals across 150 scientific disciplines. The Science Citation Index Expanded includes all cited references captured from indexed articles. Web of Knowledge is a unique indexing system that allows cited reference searching. If you're not familiar with this type of searching, see our webpage on Cited Reference Searching - Web of Knowledge.

All these resources listed with the indexes below, with links to descriptions of the resource.

Other Resources

The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is available online and in print in the Library. The list of websites below provides links to useful scholary cites that can be used in your research. A list of helpful reference books in the Bata Library is found at the end of this page.

Physics Websites
 ACRL Internet Resources : Physics
An annotated list of key resources on the internet, from the Association of College & Research Libraries News (March 2000).
AIP Center for History of Physics
A history of modern physics and allied fields, from the American Institute of Physic's Center for History.
 APS (American Physical Society)
Homepage of the American Physical Society, a professional organization of physicists. They also publish the APS Journals, to which we subscribe.
 Canadian Association of Physicists
Professional and educational information within specialized subject divisions.
 Computer Animations of Physical Processes
Offers animations and visualizations (with theoretical explanations), under the headings of waves, optics, mechanics, and thermodynamics. There are also useful links, free samples and educational programmes for downloading.
DOE Information Bridge
Free access to full-text and bibliographic records of Department of Energy (DOE) research and development reports (1995 onwards) in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics.
E-print Network
Search for electronic e-prints including manuscripts that have not yet been published, scholarly papers, technical communications, or similar documents relaying research results among peer groups in science and technology (from the U.S. Department of Energy). Also includes a gateway to over 12,000 Web sites and databases worldwide, containing e-prints in basic and applied sciences, primarily in physics
Energy Citations database (DOE) (1948 to the present)
Energy Citations provides access to bibliographic records for energy and energy-related scientific and technical information from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies. It includes citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents.
Expanding Universe
A classified search tool for astronomy sites.(from the Toronto Public Library)
Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics (KITP)
KITP is associated with the University of California in Santa Barbara. It employs a number of faculty and postdoctoral researchers. A key role it plays is hosting extended workshops (several months) on focused topics of current interest. As part of these workshops, many researchers--both theorists and experimentalists--come to the centre to work together. Many talks are presented, and these talks are available online.
Los Alamos E-Print Archive
An electronic archive for research papers in Physics.
The NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
The Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is a NASA-funded project which maintains four bibliographic databases containing more than 2.4 million records: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Instrumentation, Physics and Geophysics, and preprints in Astronomy.
