Where you look for information in Anthropology depends on what you hope to find. There is no ONE PLACE to search for everything. Information is sometimes "owned" by an organization and you'll need to search a specific database to find it.

Books

When you want to find books in the Trent Library, search TOPCAT (the Library Catalogue). There's an online tutorial available to help you understand TOPCAT.

Use a keyword search to find items on a topic. For instance, to find books on "Roman Archaeology" you might search for "roman and archaeology". To improve your results, you might try a "Power Search" and use truncation. To find books on "Roman or Greek Archaeology", try this:

Power Search for Archaeology books

Terminology Notes:

If you find one good book on your topic, check the bibliography to find other material on the same subject.

Articles

To find articles on a topic, start with an index that covers the topic. Search the index for citations, then determine whether or not Trent has access to the article, either online or in print. Use GetIt! Trent or TOPCAT or Journal Titles Available Online for this step. There's an online tutorial explaining how to find articles.

The indexes that are useful to Anthropology are listed below. They're in alphabetical order - not in order of importance. You'll find some of them are more useful than others, depending on your specific topic. Always try more than one. Always try several searches in each database.

Finding articles can take a great deal of time and searching. If your first searches don't get the results you want, examine your findings and decide how to adapt your search. Perhaps you need to change databases or try different keywords. Once you find one good article, use the bibliography to help you find more.

General Background Reading

Don't underestimate the importance of reading your course textbook first. This is often your best source for introductory information on a topic and some textbooks also offer online resources to compliment the print material. Also check what's on Reserve for your course, to see if there's something your instructor has already identified as important.

Other background reading can include specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias within the Library's Reference collection. Some of those are listed below.

A list of useful and scholarly websites is also below.

Keyword Tips

Use the term anthropology if you're searching a general database that covers many subjects, like TOPCAT or Academic Search Elite. Don't use it if you're in a database that only covers Anthropology. If you truncate it, you'll also find anthropological.

Watch the spelling of archaeology (archeology). In TOPCAT you can use the $ to find both: arch$logy. This may also be possible in some indexes - in Web of Knowledge you can use arch*logy. Again, if you truncate it (arch*log*) you'll also find archaeological.

Maya* (or maya$, in TOPCAT) will find Maya, Mayas, or Mayan. (See the truncation tutorial.) Behaviour is also spelled "behavior".

There's an online tutorial on Keyword Searching, to help you improve your searching skills.
