Importing citations from specific databases

Note: These are only a selection of databases. If you don't find instructions here for the resource you are using, you may find it within RefWorks' own Help pages in the section entitled Importing From Online Data Vendors

Abstracts in Anthropology - This database provides no exporting feature to RefWorks. You can either find an electronic record of the article in another database (e.g. Web of Knowledge) and then send it to RefWorks OR manually create a record in RefWorks.

ACM Digital Library (one citation at a time)

  1. View citation full format.
  2. Click on Display in BibTeX format.
  3. Copy and paste the results into a document and Save As a plain text .txt file.
  4. Login to Refworks
  5. Under References select Import
  6. To import the references, select BibTeX as the Import Filter and ACM Digital Library as the Database.
  7. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  8. Click on Import

ACS Publications

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Next to For Selected Content: click on the Download Citations button
  3. Under Include, select Citation and abstract for the content below
  4. Click on Download Citations button
  5. Open with internet browser
  6. Save the file.
  7. Login to Refworks
  8. Under References select Import
  9. Import using ACS Publications as the Import Filter, and RIS Format as the Database.
  10. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  11. Click on Import

ALPSP Journals (SWETWISE) - (In this database you cannot download selected results, only All results)

  1. Click on download results.
  2. Next to default download type select RIS.
  3. Save RIS file
  4. Login to Refworks
  5. Under References select Import
  6. Import using RIS as the Import Filter, and SWETWISE as the Database.
  7. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  8. Click on Import

American Physical Society (APS) Journals (one citation at a time)

  1. Click on article title to view full record.
  2. Click on Export: BibTex and click Go.
  3. Save the file at a plain text .txt file.
  4. Login to Refworks
  5. Under References select Import
  6. Import using BibTex as the Import Filter, and Multiple Databases as the Database.
  7. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  8. Click on Import

L'Annee philologique (the RefWorks option listed in this database does not always work properly so you will need to follow the alternate instructions below)

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click Export Button at the bottom of the screen. A new window will open. (Turn off pop-up blocker if necessary.)
  3. Click tab Means of Retrieving Exports and choose Immediate download.
  4. Click tab File Type and select DAT format.
  5. Click Export.
  6. Your references will now be displayed in a new window. Select all references and copy using ctrl + c.

Open RefWorks in a separate window and:

  1. From "References" menu, select Import.
  2. "Import Filter": select L'Année Philologique.
  3. Choose Import data from the Following Text and paste
    (ctrl + v) into "Import data from the Following Text" box.
  4. Click Import.
  5. References are imported into Last Imported Folder.
  6. Refer to Help for information on how to manage your references.

Annual Reviews (one citation at a time, unless browsing articles within a single issue)

  1. Click on article title to view full record.
  2. Click on Download to Citation Manager.
  3. Select Citation and abstract for this article and RefWorks as the file format.
  4. Click on Download Chapter Metadata.

ARTstor

  1. Click on the thumbnails for images for which you would like their citations to be exported to RefWorks. A red box will appear around the thumbnail when you click on it.
  2. In the menu bar along the top, click on Tools. In the drop-down menu click on Save Citations for Selected Images.
  3. Under Tools, in the same drop-down menu click on View and Export Citations.
  4. Under Export Options, click on Directly export citations into RefWorks.

Blackwell Synergy

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click on Download Selected Citations (at bottome of page).
  3. Select Plain Text for Format and select Abstract and Citation for Export Type.
  4. Safe as a .txt file.
  5. Login to Refworks
  6. Under References select Import
  7. Import the file using Wiley Interscience as the Import Filter/Data Source, and Wiley Interscience as the Database.
  8. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file.
  9. Click on Import

EBSCOhost - Academic Search Elite; MLA International Bibliography;

  1. Add items to folder
  2. View folder (Click on Folder or Folder Has Items)
  3. Click on Export
  4. Select Direct Export to RefWorks
  5. Click on Save

Gale

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click on MARKED ITEMS located in the top orange toolbar.
  3. Click on the Citation Tools icon located in the upper right of the Marked Items page.
  4. Under Export to third party software: select RefWorks.
  5. Click on Export.

Google Scholar (one citation at a time)

     Setting Preferences in Google Scholar:

  1. In Google Scholar click on Scholar Preferences
  2. Scroll to the Bibliography Manager section
  3. Click on the radial button next to Show links to import citations into
  4. Select RefWorks from dropdown menu
  5. Click on Save Preferences button

     Moving References from Google Scholar to RefWorks:

Note: There are currently some unresolved issues when exporting from Google Scholar to RefWorks. Click here for two possible workarounds.

  1. Conduct search in Google Scholar (Note: if you're working off campus you must access Google Scholar using the proxied URL: http://web2.trentu.ca:2048/login?url=http://scholar.google.com/ )
  2. Click on Import into RefWorks link associated with the desired record

HighWire Press

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Select download to citation manager and click Go.
  3. A new window will open; click download citations to citation manager.
  4. Click on RefWorks format.

Ingenta

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click on Update Marked List.
  3. Click on Bookmarking Options
  4. Click on Marked List
  5. Click Export Options link found on the left side of the screen.
  6. Click Plain Text format.
  7. Using your browswer's Save As function, save the document as a .txt file.
  8. Login to Refworks
  9. Under References select Import
  10. Import into RefWorks using Ingenta as the Import Filter, and Multiple Databases as the Database.
  11. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  12. Click on Import

Institute of Physics (IOP)

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Scroll down the page to below the results to find the Export/Email search result options.
  3. For 1 select Selected Records
  4. For 2 select BibTex as the file format
  5. For 3 select Abstract. If you do not wish to export the abstract, then select Summary.
  6. For 4 select Browser as the export location.
  7. Click Export Results.
  8. Using your browser's Save As function, save as a .txt file.
  9. Login to Refworks
  10. Under References select Import
  11. To import, select BibTex as the Import filter and multiple databases as the Database.
  12. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  13. Click on Import

International Medieval Bibliography (IMB)

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click on Export.
  3. Change the File Name if you wish.
  4. For Select Method of Export selelct Download
  5. For Format select .txt - Refworks Tagged Format
  6. Save as a .txt file
  7. Login to Refworks
  8. Under References select Import
  9. Select Import Filter - International Medieval Bibliography and database - International Medieval Bibliography.
  10. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  11. Click on Import

JSTOR (one citation at a time unless you create a MyJSTOR account)

  1. Click on Export this Citation below or above and to the right of the citation, depending on your view.
  2. Under Export Citations selelct RefWorks.

Ovid - Medline;Cochrane Databases; Evidence Based Medical Reviews;

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Go to the Results Manager at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select Selected Results in the Results section
  4. Select Complete Reference in the Fields section.
  5. Select the Direct Export in the Results Format section.
  6. Click the Save button.
  7. Select Export Citations to RefWorks and Continue.

Oxford Journals Online

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Either above or below the results you will see For check items below:. In this line select download to citation manager.
  3. Click the GO button in this same line.
  4. Click Download all selected citations to citation manager.
  5. Select the RefWorks format.

ProQuest

  1. Check the box(s) next to the citation(s) you need.
  2. Click Export.
  3. In the drop down menu presented select RefWorks then click on Continue.

PubMed - Medline

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click on Send To, then select File, then under Format select Medline
  3. Click on Create File button.
  4. Save file as a .txt file.
  5. Login to Refworks
  6. Under References select Import
  7. Import using NLM PubMed as the Import Filter and use PubMed as the Database.
  8. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  9. Click on Import

Sage Journals Online

  1. Check the boxes next to the citations you need.
  2. Click on Add to Marked Citations
  3. At top of screen, click on the My Marked Citations tab
  4. At right of screen, under For ALL Marked Citations click on Save/Print/Email/Download
  5. If you wish to include the abstract, next to Format select Citation + Abstract
  6. Click on EXPORT/DOWNLOAD to Citation Manager
  7. Click on RefWorks

Science Direct

  1. Check the box next to the citations you need.
  2. Click Export Citations.
  3. Select Citation and Abstract for Content.
  4. Select RefWorks Direct Export for Export Format.
  5. Click on the Export button.

Web of Knowledge - Arts and Humanities Citation Index; Chemistry Citation Index; Science Citation Index; Social Sciences Citation Index

  1. On the Search Results screen, select the citation(s) you want to import into RefWorks by clicking in the checkboxes to the left of the appropriate citations. Then click "Add to Marked List"
  2. On the Output Options page, leave the bold fields checked. Make sure the ISSN box is checked; this enables to work from within your RefWorks account. Check the Abstract field if you want to include article abstracts in your RefWorks database.
  3. Click the Marked List link near the top of the Search Results page. You will be taken to the "View/Manage Marked Lists" screen. Click "View Marked Records". This will take you to the Output Options screen:
  4. Under "Step 2: Select an option," make sure the second pull-down menu is set to "Field Tagged" (the default option.) Then click "Save to File".
  5. In a new browser window or tab open and login to Refworks.
  6. Under References in the top menu bar select Import
  7. Select Import Filter - ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) and database - Web of Knowledge
  8. Under Import Data from the following Text File browse for and select the saved text file
  9. Click on Import
