What is RefWorks?
RefWorks is a tool that allows you to create a personal database to organize and manage your bibliographical references. You can import and store citations from online databases and then easily create bibliographies to use in your essays and papers.

UPDATES and TROUBLESHOOTING
If RefWorks or Write N Cite are not working and none of the suggestions below apply,
please contact libraryhelp@trentu.ca.
Google Scholar
There are some unresolved problems when exporting from Google Scholar. If you are trying to import references from off-campus, you'll most likely find that the first export will usually work, but the second and any subsequent exports within the same session will give you the wrong sign-in page and won't let you access your account
The Scholars Portal support team has been able to devise two workarounds for this until the problem is fixed:
- For the second and any subsequent exports, when you click "Import into RefWorks," a new tab will open prompting you to log in (this is usually where you would get an error message). Rather than logging in here, go to the address bar and remove &groupcode=Refworks (only this--leave everything else before and after) from the URL, then press enter to reload the page. You should now be able to log into your account and your reference should import as normal.
OR
- Clear your browser's cache between each export. Click here for instructions on how to do this.
Compatibility Issues
- Internet Explore 9 users will have to to switch to Compatibility Mode (either in the Tools menu or by clicking the little broken page on the right side of the URL bar) in order to use Refworks properly.
- Write-N-Cite is not compatible with the new Mac OS, Lion. A release date for a compatible version is expected this fall.
- Write-N-Cite may not be compatible with MAC Operating System 10.6.6. OS 10.6.6 is an update for Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard users may need to install Rosetta to use WNC. Rosetta enables pre-existing Mac OS X software to run on the new platform without modification: http://www.apple.com/rosetta/
- Write-N-Cite is not compatible with Word 2011 (Mac). The new version of WNC should also address this issue.
- Write-N-Cite often has trouble working with .docx files. Please resave the file as a .doc and try running your bibliography again.
New Version 2.0 Information
As of September 1st, 2011, RefWorks 2.0 will be the default version for new users. Current account holders will see the last version they logged into. Use the buttons in the upper right hand corner to toggle between RefWorks 2.0 and RefWorks Classic. RefWorks Classic will only be available until the end of the year.
On Thurs, Aug 18th a fairly significant update to RefWorks 2.0 was loaded onto the Scholars Portal servers. The update included feature enhancements, as well as a few interface changes and a number of bug fixes. Due to this upgrade, you will likely need to clear your cache for RefWorks to function properly. Click here for instructions on how to do this.

Create in-text citations with a small download:
Download “Write-N-Cite” which enables you to insert parenthetical references into your document as needed. Once the document is complete this tool will automatically generate a bibliography of all the sources cited within the document. If you plan to use Write-N-Cite off-site you will need to load the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility.

Group Code:
The groupcode is an alphanumeric code that allows access to RefWorks from off-campus. However, you should never need to use the groupcode when you are accessing RefWorks via databases Trent subscribes to or from the link on the library's homepage. If you do need the Group Code, click here.

Sharing Folders :
Refworks now includes RefShare, a feature used to create reading lists for students or to share citations with colleagues. To use it, put the citations you want to share in a folder, click on Organize & Share tab, right click on the folder you want to share, and click"Share Folder". RefWorks provides a link to the folder, which you can send by email or add to a course in myLearningSystem. You decide what options are available to users, but no one else can edit your folder. Everyone who has the link can view the folder, even if they don't have a RefWorks account. A button is provided, so that users associated with Trent can access the item online.
See Information Services for help with this feature.
