The above search tools list paper and electronic resources published by Statistics Canada.

A number of these collections are available online from Statistics Canada web sites. Collections marked as available from libraries participating in the Depository Services Program " DSP" or the Data Liberation Initiative "DLI" can be obtained from the Trent Library MaDGIC Unit (some restrictions apply).

The DLI provides academic institutions with affordable access to
Statistics Canada’s data files and databases for teaching and research.

         I. Selected Off-line Products
        II. Geographic Files
III. Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs)

How to Access the DLI Collection:

The DLI Colletion is available to Registered Members of Trent University, for research and teaching purposes (non-commercial use only). Files can be obtained from Trent Library MaDGIC Unit by completing a DLI Request Form.

In addition, through a special agreement between Trent University Library and the Univesity of Western Ontario, a number of DLI data sets can be downloaded directly from the University of Western Ontario's Equinox data delivery system. Access to Equinox is limited to Registered Members of Trent University, from computers on Trent Campus only. Please contact Trent Library MaDIC Unit for further information or assistance with Equinox.

For advanced research projects:

Research Data Centres (RDC) provide access to confidential (master) files from longitudinal surveys. The centres are staffed by Statistics Canada employees and found within select universities in Canada. They are operated under the provisions of the Statistics Act in accordance with all the confidentiality rules and are accessible only to researchers with approved projects who have been sworn in under the Statistics Act as 'deemed employees.'

Please contact Trent Library MaDGIC Unit for further information on Statistics Canada Resources, DLI, RDCs or the IDLS.

CANSIM THROUGH CHASS (restricted access)

CANSIM (Canadian Socio-economic Information Management System), is Statistics Canada's computerized data base and information retrieval service. Trent Library's subscription to CANSIM is accessed through CHASS Data Centre at the University of Toronto. CANSIM includes over 700,000 time-series relating to such topics as the System of National Accounts, Labour, Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Agriculture and Finance. As well, selected demographic and social data, such as population estimates and vital statistics, are available. The database is updated weekly.

The Canadian Census Analyser provides access to select Canadian demographic data from Statistics Canada's Census of Canada. This tool allows users to subset files and export data in varied formats including html, text, spreadsheet, SAS and SPSS.

<odesi> (Ontario Data Documentation, Extraction Service and Infrastructure), a web-based data extraction system delivered through Scholars Portal, provides common data, integrated services and unprecedented access to a significant number of datasets. This application facilitates the exploration (searching, data manipulation, creation of summary statistics, graphing and export) of multiple, sophisticated data sets quickly making even the novice an autonomous and innovative researcher. Tables can be saved in Excel or Adobe format, and full datasets or subsets can be downloaded into statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, STATA, Statistica, etc.).

<odesi> is a growing data resource that will include Statistics Canada datasets released through DLI (e.g. Census, PUMFs, Special Surveys, General Social Surveys, Health Surveys) , public opinion data (e.g. Gallup Canada, POLLARA, Listening to Canadians, Centre for Research and Information on Canada), public-domain files such as the Canadian National Election Surveys and selected files from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development)consists of 30 member countries committed to democracy and the market economy. It serves to: provide statistics and economic and social data;analyze and forecast economic development; and research social changes and evolving patterns in trade, environment, agriculture, technology, fiscal policy and more.

Source OECD is an online subscription-based resource that provides a single e-library offering online access to OECD books, reports, annuals, working papers, loose-leaf binders, periodicals and databases. SourceOECD comprises 20 thematic book collections, 24 periodicals, 3 reference titles;all in full text. In addition to these publications, SourceOECD offers access to 24 OECD statistical databases in an interactive way. This allows users to build their own tables from the latest available data, online, in real time. The interactive databases are presented using the Beyond 20/20 software. This is easy to use and requires no plug-ins or special licenses. Users can build their own tables and then export them in .csv or Excel formats, as well as in Beyond 20/20 format.

The Penn World Tables provide statistical data on 152 countries and 29 subjects.
The Trade Analyser includes tables for world trade, and separate extensive tables for Canadian imports and exports.

Statistics Canada's ESTAT is an interactive teaching and learning tool designed for the education community and available on the internet. It includes CANSIM time series (updated annually), current and historical census, Human Activity and the Environment (updated annually), the Aboriginal Peoples Survey, as well as some graphing and mapping capabilities.Frequently asked questions about ESTAT content, data and functionality.
