The substance and tone of many of the letters were altered and it is interesting to compare Our Forest Home with the original letters in Trent University Archives. Frances
Browne Stewart was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1794. She was the daughter
of Reverend Francis Browne and Anna Maria Noble. In 1796, her father
died and her mother, traumatized by his death, was unable to continue
providing for her. Left in the care of her great-uncle, Robert Waller,
of Allanstown, Ireland, Frances was raised by Harriet Beaufort, who
was Waller’s niece and who managed the household for him. Through
time, Harriet assumed responsibility for Frances, becoming mother and
teacher, and life-long mentor and friend.
