TITLE: Captain Thomas Gummersall Anderson diaries fonds

Description: This fonds consists of two typescripts of diaries written
by Captain Thomas G. Anderson. The first diary consists of reminiscences
of his early life, covering the years from 1795 to 1800 (10 pages). The
second diary was written while Captain Anderson was the visiting Superintendent
of Indian Affairs at Cobourg, Canada West from September to December 1849.
It includes an account of a journey to settle an Indian land claim on Lake
Superior and Lake Huron (34 pages).

Description: This item is a 16 page compilation of letters and excerpts
from letters gathered in response to an attack on the Department of Education
contained in a 24 page pamphlet written by G. Mercer Adam, a bookseller
in Toronto. The first section contains three letters by Rev. Dr. Egerton
Ryerson. The second section contains replies from public school inspectors,
while the third section contains responses by J. George Hodgins, manager
of the depository, and remarks and opinions of school trustees.

TITLE: Leslie Barker fonds

Description: This fonds consists of three notebooks filled with newspaper
clippings which reflect the exploits and accomplishments of three generations
of the Barker family, and which incidentally reveal much of contemporary
life. The first notebook dated 1860-1905 speaks mainly of the life of Dr.
Edward John Barker, founder and editor of the Kingston newspaper "The British
Whig", and later the daily "Whig." Dr. Barker's son, R.W. Barker, postmaster,
and later postal inspector in London, Ontario, is the second figure of
consequence in this volume. R.W. Barker apparently had a good voice and
the record shows his participation in entertainment on many occasions.
The second notebook deals primarily with the life of Captain R.K. Barker
in the Boer War. It covers dates 1899-1901 (& some later), and reveals
in significant detail the involvement of the Canadian contingent in the
Emperial campaign. The third book, 1915-1919, recounts the Canadian contribution
to World War I as revealed in newspaper articles (primarily Toronto newspapers),
with some references to Lt. Col. R.K. Barker and his brother Capt. W.D.P.
Barker.

TITLE: W.T.C. Boyd fonds

Description: Fonds consists of 27 diaries of William Thornton Cust
Boyd dated 1878 through 1917. Five of the diaries, 1884-1888, include financial
records. The diaries recount the private and public life of Boyd, and include
references to his wife, Meta, and their children, and social activities
with family and friends including boating excursions and picnics. He refers
throughout to Richard Birdsall Rogers (1857-1927), superintending engineer
of the Peterborough Lift Lock, in social and business terms, and the two
often conduct business relating to the Trent Valley Canal. Activities which
Boyd participated in regularly include yachting and boating (on the "Calumet",
"Ogemah", and "Ajax"), curling, hunting, gardening, tree planting, playing
cards, skating, canoeing, and attending the theatre. He recounts details
of the illnesses, deaths and funerals of acquaintances and family members,
including his step-brother, Mossom (Mossie) Martin Boyd. Boyd recounts
in detail the building of his house by John E. Belcher ([184-]-1915), architect,
civil engineer, and surveyor. This house is now operated as Case Manor
Nursing Home. The diaries speak of local and federal politics, World War
I, and the activities of the church. They also detail the activities of
the Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Pontypool Railway Company, the Trent Valley
Navigation Steamship Company, and the day-to-day operation of the family
lumbering and cattle/buffalo enterprises.

of the British Parliament during the reign of James I, dated February 1620
to December 1620. The manuscript is written on rag paper and is 117 pages
in length. It is bound in half-calf, and the spine has the inscription:
"Phillips MSS 3093." The binder's ticket on the inside cover has the inscription:
"Bretherton ligavit 1848."

Description: The fonds consists of 173 wartime and military letters
written by Leslie M. and Cecil G. Frost while on active service during
World War I to their parents in Orillia, Ontario. Also included are three
letter from Mrs. Frost to Leslie, telegrams relating to wounds suffered
by the brothers, and maps of the Passchendale sector. Each item is accompanied
by a typewritten memo by Leslie M. Frost, written in 1971, explaining certain
references, or expanding on a point touched on in the letters. Both of
the brothers comment on military life; politics in both Canada and Great
Britain, including the 1917 Canadian conscription issue; their concerns
of the welfore of people at home; and their plans, or lack thereof, for
after the war.

was sentenced to Leavenworth prison for anti-capitalist, anti-militarist
opinions during World War I.

TITLE: Eliza Jane (Hughes) McAlpine fonds

Description: This fonds consists of a two-volume biography of Eliza
Jane (Hughes) McAlpine, 1854-1938, written by her grandson, Wallace McAlpine,
fifty years after her death. The biography contains the Hughes family history
from the Napoleonic era, follows Eliza's parents to Canada in the 1840's,
describes the marriages of her siblings, and gives a fine sense of life
in Durham County in the early years of Canada's nationhood. Eliza's battle
with spinal meningitis is recounted. The volumes trace the events, joys,
and sorrows of the sizeable Hughes family, the accomplishments of Eliza's
husband, Dr. John McAlpine, and the experiences with horses and subsequently
automobiles. The extraordinary impact of Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles"
is described. The famous Sir Sam Hughes was Eliza's brother and some of
his exploits are described. Eliza's tour of Europe is described as it took
place just before the outbreak of World War I. Lt. A.A. MacLeod's story
is told. There is an account of Lt. Col. Cyril D.H. McAlpine's fateful
expedition in the Arctic; a biographical sketch of J.W.L. Foster who painted
a portrait of Eliza; an account of M.P. Tom Stinson's visits with Eliza;
Eliza's disgust with Vicki Baum; her pleasure in talking with Chief Paudash;
and finally her death and its aftermath. The volumes provide a wide, varied
sketch of the times in which the events transpire. Attached to the pages
within the volumes are approximately 30 photographs, most of which are
portraits, and are both in black and white, and colour.

Description: This collection consists of 278 slides taken by Rosemary McConkey during her work as a nutritionist in Malaya (1962) and in Nigeria (1965). McConkey was part of a team of medical personnel and scientists from the University of Ohio who undertook surveys of nutritional needs in these two areas. McConkey has supplied a detailed listing of the slides (below) and has also included a 45 r.p.m. recording of the national anthem of Malaya "Negara Ku,", six books relating to the two areas and a map of Malaya. TITLE: Dr. Barclay McKone manuscripts

Description: These manuscripts were written by Dr. Barclay McKone,
M.D., and are in typescript format. The first manuscript with the title
"Moose Factory Indian Hospital" describes, in addition to a brief historical
and geographical background of Moose Factory and its service area, salient
treatments used to fight tuberculosis, and the frequent successes. The
record comes alive with frequent records of specific cases. A review of
cases indicated different characteristics of the disease and its treatment
between Indians and Inuit patients. This report also refers to the treatment
of other diseases and cases handled by the hospital between 1951 and 1955.
The second manuscript with the title "Eastern Arctic Medical and X-Ray
Survey 1955" describes in more complete diary-like detail the considerable
amount of work done by group #2 of a 3 group expedition in their attempt
to grapple with all the medical problems of the eastern Arctic. Again a
primary concern is to identify and arrange to treat patients with tuberculosis.
The time frame is June to September 1955.

Description: This collection consists of an eclectic assortment of
documents and papers pertaining to many parts of Canada including 3 documents
prepared by Powadiuk for the government, 2 of which concern native peoples;
10 prints of 19th century personalities; 1905 map of the Niagara River;
papers re Indian-Eskimo Association; deeds, mortgages and trust documents
from Huron and Bruce Counties; Niagara peninsula documents including Hugh
Alexander's account book; Lord Selkirk letter dated 1837; Charles G.D.
Roberts letter dated 1892; notes on the inception of "Evangeline." A major
element in the collection relates to Mr. James Ross of East Hawkesbury,
stone mason and merchant and his family. The Ross quarry appears to have
supplied stone for the Carillon lock and for Fort Henry. The family was
involved in the East Hawkesbury school for 2 decades.

Riel in the prison at Regina to Dr. Romuald Fiset, thanking Fiset and the

Riel also voices his desire that his trial be held in Lower Canada.
