Northern Studies
The Archives holds a number of collections with a particular focus on the North: it's exploration, indigenous populations, and sovereignty. Of special interest are the Trevor Llloyd Papers and the Robert Hunter Papers (described below). TITLE: Honourable T.C. Douglas documents

Description: These documents consist of two
stapled mimeographed books. The first, dated March 1946 and entitled "The Union
of Saskatchewan Indians: The Record of the Establishment of Indian Unity in
Saskatchewan" records the minutes of meetings held in Regina, Duck Lake and
Saskatoon, and provides names of the Constitution Committee. It also contains
reprints of Treaties No.3 and 4. The second book, dated July 1946 and entitled
"The Treaties Between Her Majesty, Queen Victoria and The Indians of British
North America" contains reprints of Treaties No. 3,4,5,6,7, and 8.

TITLE: Gavin Henderson fonds

Description: This fonds consists of correspondence
and reports relating to the National and Provincial Parks Association of Canada
as well as the personal papers of Gavin Henderson. There are records on conservation,
Quetico Park, the Niagara area such as the American Falls and information on
Banff and Jasper National Parks. Included in the fonds is the thesis of George
Warecki entitled "Protecting Ontario's Wilderness: A History of Wilderness Conservation
in Ontario." Also included in the fonds are various publications on wilderness,
outdoor recreation, conservation and naturalist activities. There are also four
scrapbooks which contain clippings regarding conservation, parks and the 1972
winter olympics.

TITLE: Gavin Henderson fonds. Additions

Description: This addition to the fonds consists
of correspondence between Gavin Henderson and Professor George Warecki; Harvey
Locke when President of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society; and, the International
Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. The fonds also contain
the program and letters of congratulation regarding Gavin's Order of Canada
which was conferred in 1993. Records pertaining to the St. Lawrence Islands
National Parks and the Thousand Islands Heritage area, early minutes of the
Conservation Council of Ontario (1951-1955), brochures published by the Council
as well as articles by Gavin Henderson are also included in the fonds.

Description: This item is a journal of events
kept by the Post Manager at Eastmain, Outfit 260, James Bay District of the
Hudson's Bay Company. His instructions were to record weather conditions, temperatures,
activities of Inuit and Native fur trade, animal and bird migration patterns,
supply ship and passenger activity, mail arrivals and news of Revillon Freres
at an adjoining post.

TITLE: Indian Crafts Foundation of Ontario fonds

Description: This fonds provides a full view
of the history of a well-intentioned but short-lived organization involving
native peoples, government and the commercial world. It consists of early plans,

and bylaws, correspondence with government and native groups, craft training

TITLE: Walter Kenyon fonds

Description: This fonds consists of two binders
enclosing the typescript of a narrative called "Rivers of Ice, the Voyage of
Captain George Tyson." When the safety of the ship is threatened by being crushed
in the ice, a contingent take refuge on a large ice floe. The narrative follows
their vicissitudes and ultimate rescue.

TITLE: Professor Kenneth Kidd Native Studies photographic collection

Description: This collection consists of photographs
relating to Natives and their activities, mostly throughout Canada. The photographs
portray extensively the lives of Natives who lived in Canada during the 1800's
and early 1900's. Most of the photographs are copies of other photographs but
several are copies of sketches and paintings done in the late 1600's to the
mid 1800's. Each photograph is labelled with a title and a place of origin.

TITLE: Dr. Barclay McKone manuscripts
Accession Number: 97-1011
Description: These manuscripts were written
by Dr. Barclay McKone, M.D., and are in typescript format. The first manuscript
with the title "Moose Factory Indian Hospital" describes, in addition to a brief
historical and geographical background of Moose Factory and its service area,
salient treatments used to fight tuberculosis, and the frequent successes. The
record comes alive with frequent records of specific cases. A review of cases
indicated different characteristics of the disease and its treatment between
Indians and Inuit patients. This report also refers to the treatment of other
diseases and cases handled by the hospital between 1951 and 1955. The second
manuscript with the title "Eastern Arctic Medical and X-Ray Survey 1955" describes
in more complete diary-like detail the considerable amount of work done by group
#2 of a 3 group expedition in their attempt to grapple with all the medical
problems of the eastern Arctic. Again a primary concern is to identify and arrange
to treat patients with tuberculosis. The time frame is June to September 1955.

Description: Collection includes the agendas, minutes, and correspondence of
the Meta Incognita Project Steering Committee and the Archival Research Task
Force (ARTAF). Also included are ARTAF research materials, reports, transcripts,
notes, etc. relating to an American Historical Association meeting and a Trent
University conference which focused on the subject of Frobisher and his Northwest
initiatives.

of the pamphlet "Deed of Settlement of Pugets Sound Agricultural Society" [printed

the United States army, Northwest Service Command and 6th Service Command dealing
with the Canol Project and the Alaska Highway Project, including reports, general
orders, histories, maps and charts, minutes of meetings and conferences, and
demobilization plans. These records also contain international agreements between
Canada and the United States. The records on the microfilm date from 1940 to
1946.
