We have purchased 11 microfilm reels from Library and Archives Canada relating to the Traill Family Collection (LAC reference: MG29-D81, reels H-5 to H-15). The reels and an accompanying guide are available for research and are located in the Archivist's office. If making copies from these reels, researchers must cite the source (Library and Archives Canada) and record the full citation immediately on the copies. Also, if quoting from or using the material in any manner, the source must be cited similarly. Description: This fonds consists of two books
of poetry by Frederick Montague de la Fosse, "Verses Grave and Gay" and
"A Dream and An Allegory" which are signed by the author and given to Helen
Anderson from him. Also included in the fonds are some poems, all signed
by de la Fosse and letters to Helen Anderson from de la Fosse as well as
two photographs of de la Fosse; one as a young man (signed on the back)
and one of him as an older man.

Description: This item is a 16 page compilation
of letters and excerpts from letters gathered in response to an attack
on the Department of Education contained in a 24 page pamphlet written
by G. Mercer Adam, a bookseller in Toronto. The first section contains
three letters by Rev. Dr. Egerton Ryerson. The second section contains
replies from public school inspectors, while the third section contains
responses by J. George Hodgins, manager of the depository, and remarks
and opinions of school trustees.

TITLE: Hugh Atwood collection

Description: This collection consists of three
personal notes written by Catharine Parr Traill to her grand-niece, Agnes
Le Fenore. One is a two part card with the cover illustrated with cutout
images of a dog and a butterfly along with a wisp of moss glued to the
surface. The second part of the card is a warm salutation to Agnes and
her family. The date is December 24, 1897. The second item, dated May 12th,
is a note of thanks to Agnes for obtaining a cape [and cap?] for her, and
also refers to fatigue and the problem of swelling feet. The third item
is a letter written April 1, 1899 to "G Niece A F" [Agnes] sending belated
sympathy for two in hospital and describing in some detail Traill's own
plight, and the care offered by Kate and Katie.

TITLE: Harley R. Cummings fonds

Description: This fonds consists of primary research
material and the manuscript and photographs for Harley R. Cummings' book,
"Early Days in Haliburton". The fonds also consists of correspondence,
including letters from the Honorable Leslie Frost, photographs, maps, and
an original 1863 surveyor's diary for Eyre Township. Also included are
the C.R. Stewart diaries, dated 1902-1904. C.R. Stewart (1826-1905) was
resident agent for the Canadian Land and Immigration Company and was the
first settler in the Village of Haliburton. In his diaries he refers to
Colonel Samuel Hughes and Mossom Boyd. Stewart's son, C.E. Stewart (1851-1921)
was editor of the "Bobcaygeon Independent". The fonds also includes several
historical papers and publications written by Cummings and others.

Included are original wage lists, letters, receipts, accounting records, and agreements of the Ottawa logging company, Bronsons and Weston, with several documents relating to their York Branch operation. Documents relating to business transactions with the Boyd lumbering company of Bobcaygeon, and with individuals along the Peterson Road and Bobcaygeon Road who provided supplies and lodging for the workers comprise a part of the holdings. Mentioned are the Egan Farm in Dungannon Township, Hastings County, and the Bruton Farm on the Peterson Road in Haliburton County. There are references, too, to the operation of cadges between locations (commercial carriers which transported supplies by horses and sleigh/buggy). Also included are copy maps; photographs; notes; handwritten transcriptions of diaries of Alexander Niven and of Mrs. C.R. TITLE: Margaret Laurence letters

Description: This accession consists of three
letters, one dated January 27, 1981, one April 6, 1982, written by Margaret
Laurence to Mary E. Hamilton, a college acquaintance, and one dated September
8, 1986. In the first, which is a photocopy, Laurence expresses her delight
in the book "And Some Brought Flowers...", a copy of which Hamilton must
have sent to her. She praises the illustrations and the text and suggests
that her delight be passed on to Mary Alice Downie and E.J. Revell, co-authors
of the book. In the second letter, which is an original, Laurence graciously
acknowledges Hamilton's use of a quote in publicizing the "Flower" book.
She also comments on the possibility of being nominated for the Nobel prize,
asserting that her body of work is much too slim. An additional letter
from Laurence dated September 1986 and addressed to Elizabeth Ritchie was
forwarded to Trent University Archives in 1999 by the Canadian High Commission
in London, England. The letter had been found inside a book and concerns
Laurence's prognosis of cancer and her desire to complete her memoirs.

Description: This fonds consists of a two-volume
biography of Eliza Jane (Hughes) McAlpine, 1854-1938, written by her grandson,
Wallace McAlpine, fifty years after her death. The biography contains the
Hughes family history from the Napoleonic era, follows Eliza's parents
to Canada in the 1840's, describes the marriages of her siblings, and gives
a fine sense of life in Durham County in the early years of Canada's nationhood.
Eliza's battle with spinal meningitis is recounted. The volumes trace the
events, joys, and sorrows of the sizeable Hughes family, the accomplishments
of Eliza's husband, Dr. John McAlpine, and the experiences with horses
and subsequently automobiles. The extraordinary impact of Hardy's "Tess
of the D'Urbervilles" is described. The famous Sir Sam Hughes was Eliza's
brother and some of his exploits are described. Eliza's tour of Europe
is described as it took place just before the outbreak of World War I.
Lt. A.A. MacLeod's story is told. There is an account of Lt. Col. Cyril
D.H. McAlpine's fateful expedition in the Arctic; a biographical sketch

The first book, The Holy Bible, is a pulpit bible printed by John Baskerville
[c.1750], and includes the dedication to King James 1 and the Apocrypha.
Handwritten family records, from Thomas A. Stewart's father down through
several generations, appear on the inside of the front cover and at the
beginning of the New Testament. Included with the bible is a description
and history of the book, as provided by Reverend John Shearman. The second
book, a notebook inscribed "Frances Browne, 1811", reflects Frances Stewart's
taste in verse and sayings and is handwritten except for a few clippings
inter-leaved.

Description: Collection consists of 12 leather-bound volumes of the
plays of William Shakespeare, with "Thos. A. Stewart" bookplates glued
on the inside cover of each volume. The volumes are numbered I through
XII. Volume XII includes the following bibliographic information: "The
Plays of William Shakespeare, from the correct edition of Isaac Reed, Esq.,
London, Printed for Vernor, Hood and Sharpe, Poultry; and Taylor and Hessey,
Fleet Street. 1809." On the final page of each volume, except for Volumes
I and II, the following additional information appears: "Stereotyped and
printed by A. Wilson, Duke Street, Lincoln's-Inn Fields, London." On the
final page of Vol. I, the following information appears: "Stereotyped by
Andrew Wilson." Vol. I has the following additional names hand-written
on the bookplate: "George A. Stewart", "Louis B. Stewart", and [B] [
] Stewart". Volumes III, VI, and VIII have "George A. Stewart" added to
the bookplate. Handwritten on the bookplate for Vol. IV is "Thos. A. Stewart";
this may be Stewart's signature.

of photocopies of correspondence of Anya Seton; a play called the "Rufus
letters" 1890; a manuscript of a play; and an unpublished autobiography.
The fonds also contains original manuscript and typescript articles by

of articles on Seton. There are also photocopies of letters and documents
pertaining to Seton's relationship with Grace Seton. As well in 1992 an
inventory list was added of all Seton paintings in Philmot Ranch, Cimarron,
