BIOGRAPHY / HISTORY
Mining in Deloro began in 1868 when gold was discovered. In 1873 Canadian Consolidated Gold Mining Company, a British-based company, began mining operations which eventually failed due to the poor recovery of gold. In 1896 Canadian Gold Fields Company bought the property and the first mill was built. The operations were successful in the beginning as new cyanide technology was used to extract the gold and roasting furnaces were built to remove the arsenic from the gold. The mill was closed in 1903 due to the poor grade of the gold. In 1904 the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway was built making it possible to ship silver to Deloro for treatment. The Deloro Mining and Reduction Company was established in 1906. Over a period of time cobalt oxide production exceeded the market needs and the company invited Dr. Haynes to Deloro to work on the production of stellite, a superior cutting metal. The company changed its name to Deloro Smelting and Refining Company Limited in 1915, and the village of Deloro, the smallest village in Ontario, was incorporated in 1919. For years, the main production was stellite, arsenic, silver and cobalt. The refinery consisted of a primary treatment plant, an oxide building, an arsenic refining building, a silver refining building, an arsenic bag house, an arsenic chamber building, an arsenic pack house, and other buildings for precision casting and the manufacturing of cobalt metal alloy. In 1956 the stellite division moved to Belleville and only silver ore was treated in Deloro. The plant closed in 1961 due to competition and falling prices. Nearly all buildings were razed and tons of arsenic was buried to prevent health hazards.
This collection was in the custody of Professor Roy Bowles and Professor Morgan Tamplin before it was donated to Trent University Archives in 1998.
