Regulations on Borrowing Reserves
The Reserve Collection is a closed-stack collection of readings which
have been assigned for the current academic year. The Reserve Collection
is available to faculty, staff, and students of Trent University.
How to Borrow
To borrow a Reserve item, bring your library card and the call number
of the item desired to the Circulation/Reserve Desk. The Desk staff will bring the
item to you. A valid Library card must be presented at each transaction.
Any material loaned out on a card is the responsibility of the card owner;
do not loan your library card.
Call numbers for Reserve materials can be found using TOPCAT. See the
Finding Reserves page for help.
Loan Period
There are two types of loan periods in Reserve: 3 hour and 2 day. Most
items circulate for 3 hours and are for use in the Library only, but some
books may be taken out for 2 days. The course instructor determines the
loan period needed.
There are no renewals on Reserve items. At any one time, a borrower may
have out 2 Reserve items.
Extended loans are permitted on Reserve items under exceptional circumstances
only. Such requests are made to the Reserves Assistant during regular
business hours.
Returning Reserve Material
All Reserve items are to be returned directly to the Reserve Desk during
library hours. When the library is closed, they may be returned in the
library drop box outside the main doors; these items will be processed
as soon as possible after the library opens.
Holds
Holds may not be placed on Reserve items. Their short loan periods make
holds impractical.
Overdue Fine Rates
Failure to return a Reserve item by its due date/time will result in
an overdue fine. Reserve fine rates are higher than regular fines because
this material is in high demand.
Reserve fines are $2.00 an hour per item. There is a maximum fine of $30.00 for books
and $15.00 for reprints. Lost items are charged a replacement fee of $60.00
for books and $25.00 for reprints.
These rates apply to all items on Reserve at all times. Fines incurred
are the responsibility of the registered borrower. Fines are paid at the
Circulation Desk during operating hours.
Lost and Damaged Material
When library material becomes lost or damaged, it is costly and disruptive
to the library and its borrowers. Replacement fees are therefore charged
to the most recent borrower when problems are discovered. If you receive
an item in a damaged state, you should report this when taking it out,
to avoid being charged a fee.
Replacement fees cover the cost of replacing and/or processing lost or
damaged items. Reprint folders returned with less than half of the article
will be charge the full replacement fee. Photocopy charges to replace
individual missing pages may also be passed along.
Change of Address
The Library should be notified immediately of any change of address,
so that notices are sent to the correct location.
Finding Call Numbers for Reserve Materials
In order to pick up your reserve item, you will first need to look up
the call number in TOPCAT. There are two methods that you can use.
Finding Call Numbers by Title
In the Library Catalogue, select Title. Enter the title of the reserve
item. The item will appear with a location of "Reserve Desk". Write down the call number and bring it to the Reserve
Desk.
Finding Call Numbers by Course or Instructor
Select "Reserves" from the TOPCAT menu and enter the course code or the instructor's last name. This will provide you with a list of everything on Reserve for that course and instructor.
