The library is the information hub and gathering place on campus for individual and group learning.
Library staff work to establish an environment that is conducive to all types of learning, productivity, and academic success.
To help with this, we have established coded Learning Zones. The purpose of these Zones is to promote the library as a space for research, reflection, discovery, and learning, while minimizing unwelcome disturbance to others.

Look for signs indicating Learning Zones throughout the library. Associated with each Zone code is a set of Expectations, Benefits, and Cautions.
We encourage students to select the Zone that best fits the needs of their library visit.

If you have questions, ask library staff for assistance or email us.

At these times the area is not available for study. During all other times, patrons consulting maps and atlases for academic purposes have priority use of study tables. When workshops are not taking place, QUIET study must be observed by all library patrons when in MaDGIC.

Violation of the Policy

Adherence to the Learning Zones conduct is a condition of entry to the library. Library staff monitor food, drink, and noise levels and respond to complaints. If requested, students/staff are required to present to library staff and/or Campus Security valid Trent University identification in order to track repeat policy infractions.

Repeat or serious violations will be reported as Misconduct to the Charter of Student Rights and Responsibilities, with corresponding sanctions.

Immediate sanctions may include being asked to leave the library without warning, being banned from the Library for a period of time, and being charged by Campus Security under the Ontario Trespass to Property Act, RSO 1990, cT21. Trent Security will be called when necessary.

You may report a violation by:

  • speaking to any staff member,
  • phoning 748-1011 ext. 7420 (weekdays) or ext. 7423 (evening/weekend), or
