Peer Mentoring Program - Peterborough
Students helping students. The peer mentoring program is an academic mentor-matching service that identifies student needs, evaluates available support and services, and facilitates mentor-mentee relationships through regular communication and distribution of useful materials.
The PMP recruits mentor volunteers and screens based on academic performance and background. Mentee requests are collected and analysed; PMP assistants work hard to find a match for all requests. Matches are made based on mentee concerns and mentor background; some matches may be in small groups of 2-3 mentees to 1 mentor based on availability. When no mentor is available, it is our goal to provide personalized referrals and recommendations for other supports and activities.

Mentee
A mentee seeks the guidance of a mentor to explore additional background, conduct general review, or engage in supplementary discussion to better understand the concepts in a field or ideas on how to best approach a course of study.
Students who are struggling with specific concepts or content in a course or discipline may benefit from the guidance of an experienced mentor who can provide support from their knowledge base and skill by:
-
Explaining, demonstrating, contextualizing, interpreting, illustrating, analysing, or compiling concepts and content
-
Helping the student find his or her best way to understand material for the course
-
Acting as an academic example
-
Providing context for knowledge in the course and beyond
-
Suggesting supplementary activities and reading

Tutoring
In contrast, a tutor offers regular, paid private supervision of studies based on expertise in a field. He or she provides exercises for practice, offers intensive content review and focuses on subject-specific skill-building, generally to improve performance on exams. Students can be referred to the tutor resource list available on the ASC website.
