Faculty
The Academic Skills Centre is dedicated to instructing undergraduate and graduate students in the skills necessary to succeed and excel at university. The ASC embodies Trent’s commitment to small-group teaching and individualized learning through one-on-one appointments and small-group workshops. The ASC provides instruction in all aspects of writing and study skills, including
- Grammar
- Essay, lab and review writing
- Research and documentation
- Critical reading and thinking
- Mathematics (math skills instructor)
- Listening and note taking
- Oral presentations
- Exam preparation
- Time Management
Specialized instruction is also available for ESL students and students with learning disabilities.
Customized Workshops
Subject to availability, one of our staff members can visit your classroom to give a five-minute presentation on the centre and its services.
We can also prepare a fifty-minute customized workshop or a series of shorter workshops for your class that directly address an assignment or a particular area of interest. At least two weeks notice is required. Possible workshop topics include the following:
- the Writing and Research Process
- Critical Reading
- Writing the Essay Proposal
- Critical Thinking/Critical Writing
- Structuring a Piece of Writing
- Poster Presentations
Peer Mentoring Program
The Peer Mentoring Program is a student run program, supervised by the ASC, that matches students who need help in a particular course with student mentors who have successfully completed that course with at least a B grade. Mentors also help organize study groups for exams.
Referring Students to the ASC
When students face academic challenges, they usually turn to course instructors. Students’ concerns can often also be addressed on a more ongoing basis by the ASC, particularly when a student needs to work on skill-related issues. While most students come to the ASC on their own initiative, many are referred by instructors for ongoing help with writing, grammar or language-related issues. The ASC, however, is not simply remedial. Even the best student can benefit from a“fresh pair of eyes” on an assignment.
Students have the opportunity to see a writing instructor for up to ten sessions per term. No other university in Ontario provides the level of professional, ongoing, one-on-one academic support that the ASC does.
Individual Appointments
The one-on-one appointment is the core of what we do. Appointments often focus on a work-in-progress, a piece of writing at any stage of composition, but they also can cover any skills that the student wishes to improve.
Online Appointments
The ASC offers an online appointment service for students whose schedules don’t allow them to make appointments easily. Students can submit questions on academic skills or send drafts of their work, and an instructor will respond to their questions.
Small-Group Workshops
This workshop gives students the guidance they need to create an organizational plan to help them be successful in their courses and still find time for other activities.
Essay Writing Workshop Series
Rather than merely giving general advice, these workshops
(1. Developing A Thesis 2. Intros, Conclusions and Everything In-Between 3. Documenting Sources to Avoid Plagiarism) examine the process behind a successful essay, from finding and developing a thesis to researching, writing, editing, revising and polishing the paper.
This workshop takes some of the anxiety and confusion out of the exam experience, with techniques to meet the exam challenge described in some detail: learning for meaning and discovery, a disciplined approach to study, and planning and preparing to meet defined and anticipated goals.
Online Resources
The ASC provides online resources covering a range of academic skills. The new Documentation Guide covers how to cite and reference for all disciplines at Trent. In addition, myLearningSystem modules include Time Management and Organization, Beyond the Five Paragraph Essay, Avoiding Plagiarism through Good Essay Writing Techniques, and Study Skills and Exam Preparation.
Academic Skills Instructors
All Academic Skills instructors have graduate degrees in a range of disciplines. We bring professional experience from secondary and post-secondary classroom teaching, adult education, teaching English as a second language, and teaching children and adults with learning disabilities.
Academic Skills instructors help Trent achieve its stated goal of providing educational programs that encourage students to think critically and to communicate their ideas effectively and that foster creative interaction between academic departments, programs, faculty, staff and students.
