Individual Conferences

Appointments are available two days per week during the academic year. An instructor will meet with you for a 45-minute consultation to discuss any aspect of your academic work including:

  • Essay writing - bring in a draft of a work in progress and we will provide detailed commentary your essay, teaching you how to become an independent editor of your own work and indicating your strengths and weaknesses
  • Essay topics - bring in essay topics and we will discuss narrowing the topic, finding a thesis, and establishing a direction for research or discussion
  • Lab writing – bring a work in progress and we will discuss strategies for organization, independent editing, and research and analysis
  • Time management and study skills
  • Critical reading and thinking
  • Seminar presentations
  • Exam and test preparation

You may schedule up to eight appointments each term; this allows an instructor to work closely with you on an ongoing basis.

Online Appointments

Oshawa students are invited to submit written work online. You can submit a draft of your writing at any stage of the process and an instructor will answer your questions and offer comments. Online appointments complement one-on-one sessions to make our services more available.

Our goal is a 72 hour turnaround (excluding weekends)

Important Considerations:

  • Manage your time carefully: you will need time to read and apply suggestions before handing the assignment in.
  • Our goal is to help you improve the skills you need to independently edit and proofread your work. 
  • Help early on can be more effective than at the draft stage.
  • Our instructors will answer your questions or offer suggestions on any of the following: structure, organization, argumentation, clear writing (grammar, style, spelling), documentation, referencing, narrowing a topic and thesis statements.
