Many biology courses provide a lab manual with samples of the documentation style preference. In all other cases, consult your professor.
It may be possible to use the 7th edition ofThe CSE Manual of Scientific Style and Format published by the Council of Science Editors (CSE), as it was formerly the Council of Biology Editors (CBE); see CSE section of this guide. Otherwise, it may be possible to use one of the two leading Canadian biology journals as a model (note that they both use a parenthetical name date referencing system): Botany and the Canadian Journal of Zoology.
