The main FLT extends 562.9 miles from the Pennsylvania-New York border in Allegany State Park to the Long Path in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Branch and loop trails currently total 236.0 miles. The FLT System has been and is being built and maintained by 20 organizational and 38 individual and family trail sponsors. All of these groups and individuals are volunteers, except for personnel of the U.S. Forest Service who maintain the 12-mile-long Interloken Trail, one of the FLT System's branch trails. The Finger Lakes Trail Conference, Inc., (FLTC) was organized in 1962 to promote and coordinate the building, maintenance, and protection of the FLT System. The trail system of over 875 miles is located almost equally on private and public land. There are currently over 450 private landowners who allow the trail to be on their land. Several sections of the main FLT have been certified by the National Park Service as official components of the North Country National Scenic Trail. When completed, the North Country Trail will extend 4,600 miles across seven states between eastern New York to central North Dakota.
