ABORIGINAL AND NON-ABORIGINAL ALLIANCES AND COALITIONS FOR INDIGENOUS RIGHTS, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

PROPOSALS: PAPERS, WORKSHOPS, PANELS, OTHER PRESENTATION FORMATS

July 25, 2006 "THANK YOU to everyone who responded to the call for proposals. We have received great interest from community members, researchers and scholars. Subsequently, we have also received a tremendous response from potential contributors to the conference. the conference committee will now spend the next few weeks with the collected abstracts, so please bear with us while the conference program takes shape."

Increasingly, Aboriginal communities and organizations engage in alliances and coalitions with non-Aboriginal people in pursuing their goals of self-determination or in undertaking specific objectives. Land rights, resource rights, protecting the environment, challenges to racism, or other strategic action may set the stage for forming relationships.

This conference will focus on relationships when people come together in alliances and coalitions. Why do people choose to work together? What is achieved by doing so? What are the areas of relationships that work well? What tensions arise in relationships? What do people achieve through their joint efforts? What lessons are learned from working together?

This conference seeks to bring together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to share stories, experiences, or theories about relationships. The conference will be of particular interest to:

  • community leaders and activists working at the grassroots in Aboriginal rights, and/or social and environmental justice
  • workers in organizations involved in Aboriginal rights or social and environmental justice
  • academics and students whose work relates to Aboriginal-non-Aboriginal relationships in social change processes

Conference organizers invite presentations that may take the form of formal paper presentations (20 minutes), workshops (1.5 hrs.), panels (1.5 hours) or other presentation forms (e.g. short film or play). Presentations may be case studies, analysis of experiences, or relevant theoretical explorations. Proposals may include assembling a panel around a relevant theme or issue. Presentations that include Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal partners are of particular interest to the conference. While the main focus of this conference is on the Canadian context, international experiences are also welcome.

Selection of presentations will attempt to represent the diverse contexts in which Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alliances and coalitions form, including themes, identities and geographies. Presenters are expected to assume the costs of their participation in the conference, including registration, travel and accommodation.

One of the outcomes of this conference will be an edited book on Aboriginal-non-Aboriginal alliances and coalitions. Conference papers and presentations will be considered for inclusion in this book. Towards that end, conference sessions will be recorded.
