My research interests are to examine the impact of exercise and environmental stress on special populations (pregnant women, military personnel, and the elderly). My research on fetal well being during maternal exercise was designed to support and develop guidelines for exercise during pregnancy. It was found that mothers could exercise at a heart rate up to 170 beats and improve their level of physical fitness without adverse effects on the fetus. Physical exercise and environmental stress can modulate immune function and thus susceptibility to disease. My research involving military personnel was used to ensure that recruits were not more susceptible to infectious illnesses when in training or field operations. At present, my interests are to examine the role of exercise in the modulation of immune function in the elderly. Older individuals are more susceptible to certain diseases (cancer and autoimmune disorders), however, regular moderate exercise has been shown to improve immune function in the elderly. I will be examining the hormonal, cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in such changes.
