Welcome to our Web Site!

Welcome to the Institute for Health Studies web site!  The Institute has come a long way since it was launched in 2001. Today, there are over fifty faculty members associated with us, all with expertise in teaching areas related to health.  Many members are also involved in health-related research.

Across Trent University, there are approximately twenty programs and departments that are involved in teaching and research related to human health. The programs of study and research fall broadly into two categories – health sciences and health social sciences/humanities. In addition to nursing, several programs such as anthropology, biology, environmental sciences, psychology and sociology, have a great many courses and research activities in health-related areas. Other programs have varying levels of activity, such as business administration, Canadian studies, chemistry, computer sciences, economics, geography, history, philosophy, Native studies, political studies and women's studies.

The goals of the Institute are to:

• Provide a focus for the different types of health-related research that are conducted at Trent University,

• Assist researchers in obtaining funding, to foster greater communication among health researchers within and outside the university

• Serve as a link between Trent University and other health institutes

• Foster better communication to the general public of basic health research and its applications, and

• Facilitate the training of graduate and undergraduate students for careers in health related fields.

The Institute sponsors regular research colloquia and an annual lecture series that is open to faculty, students, health care workers and the community at large.  Conferences are held each year in order to showcase the range and depth of research interests and activities by members of the Trent community
