Soil Model

The Soil model, written in BASIC, gives a very simple assessment of the relative potential for degrading reaction, evaporation, and leaching of a pesticide applied to a surface soil.

A more detailed description is included in the book "Multimedia Environmental Models; The Fugacity Approach" by D. Mackay, Lewis Publishers, CRC Press. 1991 on pages 193-198.

The SoilFug model is a friendlier alternative for Windows users.

The required input data are:
Chemical Properties:

  • chemical name
  • temperature
  • molecular mass
  • water solubility
  • vapour pressure
  • organic carbon partition coefficient, Koc
  • mineral-water partition coefficient
  • degradation half-life

  • chemical dosage
  • Soil Properties:

  • soil area and depth
  • mean vertical diffusion distance from middle of soil layer to surface
  • volume fractions of air and water
  • mass fraction of organic carbon
  • leaching rate
  • Model output includes:

  • system fugacity
  • Z and D values
  • fluxes
  • concentrations and amounts in each compartment
  • residence times
  • System requirements to run the compiled program are minimal.
